My MS3 with ~750 miles on it fairly consistently grinds on a shift from third to first or second to first, and sometimes from first gear going into second, and there's a good deal of resistance at the entrance to both first and second gear that I have to push/pull through. There's also usually a delay in shifting gears due to the resistance.

Am I wrong in thinking that's abnormal transmission behavior for a virtually brand-new car? The car had 100 miles on it when I bought it, and I can only think how it was abused through those first 100 dealer-lot miles (trip computer's average mpg. was also below 12 mpg ) but do you guys think that's something actionable to take to the dealership?

On another note, I'm noticing a fairly high-pitched rubbing noise/vibration through the wheel when after being on the highway, I get off and make a left turn at lower speeds. Have any of you encountered anything like this?

I havent had any of these issues....i'd take it back to the dealer and have them check it out. Many people dont like the notchieness of the shifter on the ms3 though.

Shouldn't be shifting 3rd to 1st in the first place. I noticed quickly that the MS3/6 doesn't like to be put into 1st until you're almost at a dead stop. So I have just resorted to rev matching when I want to get into first when I'm still moving a bit. Works like a charm, slides in like a hot knife through butter ;-)

the shifter should not be that way. As for that vibration, I have experienced that a couple times. Its usually when I am going about 1mph though, and pulling into a driveway or something. Doesn't happen often

Most cars don't like to go into 1st while moving.

The notchiness I can live with - plus I just ordered TWM shifter bushings yesterday - it's just the resistance to going into gear, and then the grinding, that makes me wonder if my synchros have already taken a severe beating. I've driven a stick consistently for years on end now so I'm pretty confident I haven't done damage to the transmission.

The only time I shift from third into first is when having used braking + engine braking to either make a turn or when slowing before coming up to an intersection, but then have to get back up to speed from an almost complete stop. Even when rolling at < 5mph it will grind, same with going from 2nd up to 1st.

The vibration is a little worrying, I'm going to try to have the dealer look at that as well.

True, but do most cars grind as well? :P

Anytime I've down'd to 1st, I bring the revs up with the accel. I don't go to 1st on my 5, unless I'm stopped. And, yes... I do recall grinding several cars going into 1st while going more than 10 MPH. The only exception that I recall, would be a 70-80's VW. They didn't even grind without using the clutch.

I've read that the rotors may be a bit thick, causing the brake pads to rub, which makes a vibration/high pitch sound as you described. Mine seem to be doing this (at times, at low speeds when I can plainly hear it) and we're both at low miles. I've just written it off as such and figure after a bit my pads will wear to the point where the noise ceases to exist.

Is this different from what you're describing?

I wondered if that might be the case, that the geometry of the wheels were being altered enough so that with the wheels turned something was binding enough to generate noise/vibration. I may give it a bit to see if that rectifies itself with wear, but the trannie is still a bit bothersome.

I hear ya, I'm still getting used to the tranny myself- but no grinding...just a bit notchy like already mentioned. I'm pretty sure (at least in my particular case) it may be the rotors, as the noise will stop breifly when the brakes are applied...but if I didn't know any better, I'd be a bit worrysome about the vibration-noise I hear- only time will tell I suppose.

Almost sounds like the Speeds have the same tranny as the 8.

Strange. I have never experienced anything like this. No grinds, no strange noises, ect.... I have about 9400 miles so far. Hope its nothing. Let us know if you find anything out.

Take it in. It's not normal. Your trip computer won't give you an accurate reading until you have enough miles to get a good average.

woah, that is def not normal, popping out of gear? your sure your not driving a civic si?
