Finally getting things done on the car. It's been slow with just a little bit of stuff here and there but it has accumulated to where I am happy with the work.

Firstly I picked up a used wing and diffuser. Both were missing all attaching hardware so it took some research and creativity to get them mounted and secure.

The diffuser was very challenging to figure out where the brackets needed to go and what they attached to. got a little creative at the back and made a hanger that holds it to the license plate mount.

I had looked into the "euro" washer tank for the Water/meth system, finding it was about $800 for a 3 liter tank was a little too much for me. I think the price is so high because it also has 3 washer pumps built into it which would be a waste for me and a lot of holes to plug up.
So for the past month I have been working on a water/methanol tank as welding practice since I got the new TIG.
First plan was to use .040" 5052 Aluminum which turned out to be too challenging for me to work with. Shadow had some extra .080" from his cruise control relocate bracket and gave me that to try out, It was much easier to work with.
My first seams were very rough and I had to go back over them at the end to fill in all the pinhole leaks.

Attached it to the lowest point of the rear washer tank to fill and ran a vent from the top of the tank to the right rear shock tower.

All together holds about a gallon and a half.

Mounted the pump beside the gas tank and plumbed and wired it in. Now I need to go find some methanol and try it out.

Turned out great! I really want to try and build something out of flat stock one day. Your tank with multiple angles is a real work of art. I suspect by the time I finished something like that it would be so heat distorted it would be unuseable.

I am pretty happy with it, there were a few cardboard models created before I cut any metal though as it does have some odd shapes. It seems to be working very well, If I had it to do over I would add another baffle. As it is it has one, the big box part of it was all assembled first and then I made the narrow box onto it so they have a baffle between them.

I set the low level indicator to just barely protrude into the tank void leaving the little part on the bottom always full for the tank pickup. but at very low level it does trigger the low level sensor. Not really a problem since it is just an indication and doesn't shit the system down but I would have liked another baffle here:

As for heat distortion the whole damn thing would get so hot after going about 3 inches I would have to get away from it and let it cool down.

You should give the people an idea of the performance factor of your new wing. I know you only had 1 track day on it, but thought you had some interesting first impressions. You need to cut out an aluminum splitter with a 2-2.5" protrusion out the front :) That will couple well with your new diffuser.

I have heard/read that in some states (CA), splitters can't protrude the side of the car.

Nice. Looking forward to see if the WMI lowers temps to allow longer lapping sessions. Also want to know if you see higher corner and straight speeds with the new aero pieces.

I am hoping to get things sorted out soon, I did go to the track after putting the wing on and was slower then before. I don't know if the wing had anything to do with the times though as the track was very hot and I couldn't seem to get the suspension dialed in. I do feel like my corner speeds will be faster as I felt I was able to bring more throttle in sooner leaving corners without oversteering like it used to. Hopefully it will be worth the weight.
As for the WMI I am really hoping it cures the heat issue, I know the stock FD intercooler is a joke and needs upgraded but that is a fab project I am not in a good place to tackle.

Ever since I finished the WMI install I have had the fuel gauge start to go wacky when the level was below 1/2. I used the fuel sender and pump wiring grommet to route the WMI tubing and pump wiring. Today I pulled the cover back off and found I had pulled the ground wire off the chassis. Hopefully this will fix my gauge issues.
I am anxious for this Sunday to see how much cooler she runs at the track!

WMI review

Postby Dwduc » Sun Jul 31, 2016 9:14

I have put about 2 full tanks of gas through the car since the WMI install, With the way I have it set I go through approximately 3/4 gallon to full tank of gas (about 18 gallons). It definitely feels more robust during hard accel, like everything is smoother. but the way the controller works is by controlling the pump output based on boost pressure. You tune it by nozzle size (250-500-1000 cc/min), start pressure and wide open pressure. By the AEM chart I selected the 500cc/min nozzle, and set the injection to start at about 1-2psi and be at full flow by 15psi. this works great at full throttle, the problem comes in when I am just cruising along at a steady speed at lower RPM. When I start to climb a small hill the itty-bitty stock primary turbo hits 8-10 psi under less than 1/4 throttle. So very little fuel is being injected but the WMI controller sees that boost level and starts spraying in like 300cc/min and overwhelms the combustion causing power loss, sending the AFR to sub 10s and me having to give it more gas to compensate. This is where a fancier controller like Eric's probably works very well as I believe his looks at TPS and MP to decide how much to inject. Also I am just running PEAK -25 washer fluid in the tank now which is 35% methanol to 65% water. A more methanol rich mixture might not have as much tendency to extinguish the combustion. If I can find a local place to buy methanol to mix myself I will try that to see if it improves, otherwise I may switch to the 250cc nozzle for daily driving and just install the 500cc for track days.

On another note I raised the ride height a little bit since I was worried I was gonna rip the diffuser off before it ever saw the track, looking at the suspension I really want to replace the springs with a known linear rate set. It has the progressive rate Aragosta ones on it still. I'm still a little lower in the front than I would prefer (24.5" to the top of fender arch) but the rear is right at the recommended 25".

What about changing the starting pressure to about 12psi? That way it won't kick on in that situation, and I wouldn't be too concerned with lower boost anyway. And you'll go even longer periods between having to fill up your tank. And it will still give you injection where you need it most.

My controller may be fancy, but that's only when it works, and I don't believe it is right now. And because it's so fancy, I can't figure out why it's not working. And of course the company I bought it from was bought out by Holley and they use their ECUs to control that system and no longer make the control box. GREEEEEAAAAAT. So I'm kinda shopping for another kit. Unfortunately the FJO is the only one I know of that uses an injector instead of a nozzle, and I'd kinda like to keep it that way. But if I got another kit that was a bit more basic I wouldn't have to worry about this again.

TL;DR maybe try changing the start pressure to around 12psi lol.

I think that would help detonation at high boost but My intent of this kit was to lower the IAT which gets out of control no matter how low I set the boost control. That sucks about your controller. Any chance the Syvecs has a couple unused injector drivers in it??

Oh ok gotcha. Yeah I'm not sure what to tell you then lol. I'm really surprised no one else has released a kit like the FJO.

That's a good idea. I'll have to talk to Chris about that. I know it has water injection capabilities but Chris said it's not as advanced as the FJO controller, and it actually sounds like it's not as advanced as any other kit on the market lol. It basically just injects constant pressure I believe.

A terrible thing happened on my way to work this morning. Cruising down Highway 105 at about 3:45 I hit a deer near the intersection of highway 67. I had Pandora playing on the car radio and was looking down at the display skipping songs when a deer ran out. I hit him with the front left, The headlight took the brunt of the impact and sent it away from the car but I managed to shear my passenger mirror off on it somehow also.

The damage isn't too extensive. The entire headlamp assembly is trashed. the bumper took a little hit and has some spiderwebbing. The fender got pushed back in the front which caused some buckling but I don't see any impact marks on it. I pulled the headlight assembly out so it wasn't flopping around and the biggest concern is the bracing that supports the front of the fender that the headlight assembly attaches to is very slightly tweaked.

I'm sure shadow would say its totalled, ;)

That'll buff out.

So tuning will be pushed to the back I assume to address this?
