Another day, another TSB realized. The parking brake lever boot snapped this morning. There's a TSB out there for it. The bad thing is that I have the leather handle, so they BETTER replace the lever with that one, rather than the stock plastic handle. Sucks, go to disengage the parking brake this morning, and I hear the snap. Grrr.
Gee, I wonder if this applies:
DESCRIPTION
During cold weather, some vehicles may experience one or more of the following issues with the parking brake
lever:
• The parking brake lever cover is broken.
• The parking brake lever cannot be lowered completely and the parking brake warning light stays illuminated.
• When operating the parking brake lever, the center console may move and/or shift.
In temperatures at or below -0C (32F) the plastic material of the parking brake lever cover can become brittle
and may break easily. On vehicles built after July 1st, 2005, the plastic material of the parking brake lever cover
has been changed to prevent cracking.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern.
2. Replace the parking brake lever with a modified one. Refer to Workshop manual section 04-12 PARKING
BRAKE LEVER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION.

Suuuuuuuuuuure. I have to go down for the sun visor replacement at some point, so I'll have them look at it then (just called Burt). If it was Lakewood, I'd be 100% positive that they wouldn't replace it with the correct lever.

Well, here's the
TSB for the issue. Quick note for those with RX-8s: If you feel like the parking brake won't go down all the way when you disengage it, you'll break the cover. That's exactly what happened to me, as I thought it was a parking brake adjustment that was needed. Nope.
Here's a picture (taken from the TSB) of what broke:

So I took my car to the dealer for an oil change today. Got done really fast. I hop in my car and say..."I hope the cover on my e-brake doesn't break ever"....well I look down at it and it's broken. So it'll take about a week for them to get one in.
Thanks for the info Tim. If you hadn't posted I would have never have seen that it was broken.

I broke that on mine a while ago. You saying that Ed can fix mine as well? When are you going down there, so maybe you can tell him to order two?

Yup. I'll be down there when they get mine in. When are you going down Tim? Maybe me or one of you could give them a call and see if they can order 2 more.

They won't order mine without seeing it. I figured I'd go down when they get the sun visor in, but so far, no call.

Hmm... Intresting. Looks like you have to make a trip down there Angelo. Sucks but understandable that they want to see it first.
