If it's smoking all the time, it could be the turbo (like we texted about). Does it also happen in boost? In decel immediately after boost?

The only other possibility would be an oil control o-ring is toasted. How many miles do you have? Oil control rings and the o-rings are generally deemed good for 100,000 miles minimum unless they have been oil starved, which causes them to overheat and get cooked/burn and then crack/warp and fail.

Unfortunately, the only real good way to determine if it's oil control rings/o-rings or the turbo is either swap the turbo (not easy) or pull the turbo and manifold off, peer in the exhaust ports and see if the rotors are pushing oil out the exhaust ports. This is more difficult to do on the Renesis due to the side exhaust port design, so the rotor doesn't sweep directly over the exhaust port. But if the oil seals are indeed gone, there still should be a lot of oil getting pushed out the ports as you spin the motor.

I get a bunch of smoke when getting into boost. A giant cloud when going from a dead stop. When cruising I don't see any smoke. Now that you mention it I think I may have toasted the oil control rings. I haven't really checked the oil level since I last had the turbo off in Sept/Oct, about 2000 mikes ago.. I took a look the other day and it was pretty low. Dumped a quart and a half in.

I guess I'll try to pass emissions. Looks like I'll have to pull the turbo off anyways. So if I fail I'll pull it and check to see if there is any oil coming out the exhaust ports,

Oh and I have 57k on the car. Something like 25-30k miles on the motor.

Okay so here is the plan. On a warmer day like today the smoke is not as apparent so it may pass visually for 'cold' smoke. I'm gonna put the cats in this weekend and if we have nice weather next week I'm going to try and see if it passes.

I have yet to determine if it is the turbo or the motor. At this point I have no option but to revert back to N/A to determine if it is the motor or the turbo. If it is the turbo then my build for a custom kit will start sooner than I planned. If it is the motor I will continue with the process of tearing the motor apart with the help of the CMZC rotary crew and soon a rebuild. I'll keep you all posted.

So I went to an Air Care Colorado station this past week for my test. I'm still only at 1-of-2 cats since my testpipe is/was installed. Anyhow... despite what I thought was an early arrival time, I still had myself a 30m wait, before they could get me on the AWD dyno. I just let the car idle while I waited and creeped forward.

The inspection of the car went normally enough and they got it up and ready for the test. About a minute into it though (as I'm watching the testing screen from the booth), I see a "Test Failed" message flash and then a "call for a Supervisor Override" screen appears. Several minutes later a sup. comes by and keys in his override and I see a "Failed to achieve required accleration" message stay up on the screen, followed by the sup. answering about (4) yes/no questions about his observations of the car:
- Did you witness smoke?
- Any error or 'check engine' codes displayed?
- So on... So forth....

"Uh Oh" I start thinking as I watch them process in the next truck and move me forward toward the exit.

Long story short - and much to my surprise - they eventually hook me up to the gas cap pressure tester and following those several minutes I get called out to pay for my test pass. Not sure what all of the situation was about, but I didn't bother to press for more explanation. I politely paid my $25.00 and got out with my paperwork. All of my levels were well below the limits, so I guess done and done. MS6 and the One Cat Pass; it'll be the name of my book.

EDIT: Oh yeah... Almost forgot to mention that I totally spaced out removing the Cobb tune and returning the car back to binary stock. I did intend to do that, but I was already too far into it by the time I realized I hadn't done it. I actually had to leave the booth and go back out to the car while they were doing the visual, to unplug the Cobb dongle from the OBDII. Ha!

Most likely the operator was unable to keep the vehicle speed within a few mph of what the test computer was expecting during an acceleration from 30mph to 60mph. I've had that happen to me when the operator wasn't paying much attention.

Update - I pulled the turbo out, threw the exhaust system from the grey car on the blue one. No smoke at all so it looks like I blew the turbo. Sending it out in a month or two to get rebuilt and converted to water cooled. Then after I get some zoom back in it I'm going to start constructing a custom Turbo kit on the grey car for the blue one.

Oh BTW, I just passed the emissions test.

I'm up for emission test too on my MS3 for the first time. I don't have a second cat. Hope it'll pass.

Fully catless since 2005. I always keep the old exhaust around though so I can do the swap if it does ever come back.

Yay!!! I passed!!! With flying colors!!! I guess if they drive it correctly, it would be very little load and out of boost most of the time.

You will pass. I just did the other day. I have a test pipe on mine too and it passed with no issue. The only issue I had was trying to stay calm as I watched the "tech" try to destroy my car first trying to get it on the damn rollers and then trying to get it to speed once on. I can't stand that place and the people they hire to run their BS tests.
