No compression on my rear rotor. Im trying to decide what to do. Does anybody rebuild these locally?

Anyone happen to have a good condition shortblock?

Thanks.

I'm going to rebuild my own when the time comes (we all know it will). It's not too difficult if you take your time, buy a rebuild DVD, and a quality rebuild kit. And don't be afraid to ask questions.

There aren't really any "Pro" shops in Colorado that rebuild rotaries, however, or anyone within a decent drive.

I would HIGHLY recommend Brian Cain/BDC Motorsports. He's in Texas, so you will have to pallet and ship your motor, but it's not bad. You're looking at $300-$350 both ways to have it shipped via freight. http://bdc.cyberosity.com/main.php

Brian really knows his stuff with rotaries, he cleans stuff so it looks brand new, his ports look like a 5-axis CNC machine created them, and he's easy to get a hold of/ask questions/etc. Tell him Chickenwafer Dave sent ya if you decide to go with him.

I would like to rebuild it myself. rebuild kits I have found are between 12-1400. Most likely need a new housing and rotor. so another $400 - $1200 ( used vs new)

I hear that since my engine has 80k on it, even the good housing will probably have cracks too. Can housings be welded or "milled".

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Check out Rotary Aviation rebuild kits. They are priced >$1100 and they include the vaulted RA Classic seals. For not much more you can upgrade to RA Super Seals. They also sell an excellent rebuild how-to DVD.

If you want porting while you're in there (I would) you could ship the irons and housings out to BDC for porting for far cheaper than a total rebuild.

Housings are pretty much a wear item so around 100,000 miles they are mostly trash. While you can pinch pennies and save money by using used housings with higher mileage, the motor will never make the compression or power it could with newer or completely new housings. The problem is they are expensive.

If you do end up doing the rebuild yourself I would be more than happy to lend a hand!

+1 on the RA rebuild kit. thats what i have on my bridgeport 6port.

you can get full aluminum housings from racing beat theyre only about 2k a housing lol

but on a serious note, used housings arent so bad or if your housings look alright and free of cracks you can probably get away with just have them lapped. cheap and cost effective.

if you need any help in rebuilding ill be more than happy to.

im also rebuilding a 13b na for someone in denver at the moment. also if you need porting done i can do it, just as long as it doesnt go beyond a full bridgeport. i can do a full peri port just dont have the tools needed at the moment.

Damn I wish I was home so I could help too lol. I rebuilt mine too, and it wasn't bad. The only thing I worry about is things like checking specs, specifically checking for runout since I didn't do that LOL.

And I'm pretty sure the housings can't be lapped, but the irons can. I had my irons lapped. Although some say not to do that since it takes off some of the nitride coating. But you can get them nitride coated again too, so whatever. It all just costs money haha.

well "irons" are technically speaking are "housings." i dont know where they got the term "irons" come from but w/e ill roll with it lol. and yes they can be lapped. "rotor housings" cannot. its impossible.

mines tore apart yet again, gonna go with a streetport and some rx8 rotors and encentric with ra seals. its my 3rd time tearing it apart and i can probably do it with my eyes closed.

also how much is that nitride coating? any good? i was thinkin about sending mine to mazdatrix so they can do that magnetize thingy.

I'm not sure on the nitride, I never had it done. It's supposed to be the shit. Not sure how much it costs though. What magnetize thingy are you talking about? LOL

I was just saying sometimes people get confused with all the parts being called housings, especially when it comes to lapping, then they think the part that actually houses the rotor can be lapped when it cannot. I was one of those people a couple years ago haha, that's why I try to be as clear as possible now.
