STOP CALLING IT AN EMERGENCY BRAKE! It's a PARKING brake. You never want to apply difficult to modulate braking force to the rear tires in an emergency unless it's a last resort- as in total hydrualic failure to all other brakes. If it was truely an emergency brake, it would probably act on the front brakes. Have you ever tried to bring your car to a stop using only the parking brake? It doesn't work very well. Front brakes do something like 70-80% of the total braking on most cars. That's why "typically" rear brakes are smaller than the front (although my Protege is an exception to this rule) and almost always the front discs are vented while the rears are solid.

But if your parking brake can't hold your car on slight inclines, it's in desperate need of adjustment. After I swapped my rear pads, my parking brake got all jacked up until I tightened it.

I could show you how to adjust the parking brake, it is not that hard.

He did get a chick car. Good thing he realized that. The new body style is even more of a chick car. GSX for me.

Any Idea how to adjust this myself. Seeing as my appointment to check my CEL is set for Tuesday. Cylinder one Missfire. That was the same code it threw when I found out my baby needed a heart transplant. Hope we don't have to go through it again.[/b]

Engine transplant? Cylinder misfire? I don't have any cylinders in my 8! Haha. Anyway, it's probably that your parking brake isn't adjusted properly. Pop off the adjustment cover in the center console and adjust the nut on the handle. I've never had a problem with mine.

The long bolt in the pic (with the nut removed already) is what you'll be adjusting, and can be reached just by popping off the little cover. I have the entire console out in that picture when I was replacing my handle.

1. Depress the brake pedal several times.

2. Remove the service hole cover of the rear console.

3. Turn the adjusting nut and adjust the parking brake lever.

4. After adjustment, pull the parking brake lever one notch and verify that the parking brake warning light illuminates.

5. Verify that the rear brakes do not drag.

This was off the service manual
