Anyone for a game of "where does this connector go?"

Postby Ranger » Thu Jun 02, 2011 9:14

Finally found out why the add coolant buzzer is going off in my FD: it's not connected to anything  Of course it's connected at the sensor side, but it's not connected at the other side. The sensor wire goes up into the emissions harness, then comes back out on the other side, into an empty plug. It's a small single-wire plug, black in color. The wire color is black and red (brown? hard to tell). Here's the connector, you can also see where it splices into the other harness:

I've been looking through the FSM, at the wiring diagram section, and I don't think it makes sense for this to be a black and red wire, as far as I can tell. Assuming this is the wire for C1-07 (P. Z-44 of the FSM, instrument cluster) it should be solid black. It is up until a certain point, until it becomes this black and red wire. I'm half wondering if this is even the right wire for the job? I know it connects to the coolant level sensor because I tested continuity using a multimeter. Strange.

Anyway...FD owners, could you take a look and see if you can figure out where the hell this thing goes? Trace the coolant level sensor wire back, and it should come out on the other side of the alternator. Also, anyone who wants to come take a look in person is welcome to do so ;) Thanks!

That wire connects to another single wire that comes from the thick harness that runs behind the PS pump assembly, about halfway down the engine.

Thanks, I'll look tonight, then. I know it connects to the engine harness, but it's hard to tell where. It's the one here that says "to emissions harness:

But it's hard to tell where exactly that connector would be when it's in the car, haha. Guess I'll look from below, maybe it'll be easier to see it that way...

When I got my car, the wire coming from the sensor was grounded to the chassis, and I thought that was normal. Once I got new harnesses I realized it was not normal. I'm trying to remember where that connector is on the engine harness but I'm drawing a blank. With the engine harness laid out correctly, it should fall pretty close to where that one comes off the starter harness though. I'll look at mine in the morning and trace it back. However, it might still be hard for you to find by yourself if you haven't found it already. Do you know what to look for as far as the matching connector (male side)? I will be up your direction on Saturday. Is it drivable or is it still down? If it's drivable, meet us at Speed Raceway at 9.

I looked a little harder but didn't find it. Only thing I have to go off is that picture above and the FSM. It's drivable but not registered or insured, so I can't risk taking it out to speed raceway. BUT that sounds like fun anyway, I didn't know you guys were going. Maybe I'll go and I can sucker someone into coming back to my place to look  It's a bit of a trek from speed unfortunately, half hour or so.

Edit: are you sure we're talking about the same sensor? If it was grounded, the add coolant buzzer should've been going off. It's the single wire one on the front of the water pump housing.

Well maybe I'll just follow you back so I can take a look at it. Yeah it's the same wire. Mine became disconnected one time and the buzzer was going off, driving me crazy haha.

So I obviously didn't make it to speed, but I found the connector. Factory one was cut off and replaced by a spade connector. Wrapped the whole thing with electrical tape, works great. First time I started it up my thought was ahhh, how I've missed that sound. What sound? Silence...backed by a purring rotary :)

So the car is now running good? What else do you have to fix?
