Deals Gap Rotary Rally 2011 (DGRR)

Postby chickenwafer » Sat Dec 11, 2010 9:14

It's officially back on for 2011! (just saw the update on 7club).

For those who don't know, DGRR has been running for 5 years (this will be the 6th) and is a great combo between car show and fun drive/rally. It takes on the US129 highway, also known famously as the Tail of the Dragon, 130+ turns in 5 miles that winds through North Carolina and Tennessee.

More info can be found here: http://dealsgaprotaryrally.com/

Registration is opening early January 2011. It would be pretty cool for us to get a caravan going out there together. Non-rotary vehicles are also encouraged to attend (after all, we need someone to handle all the luggage LOL).

I'm not 100% if I can make it, with a wedding come up that summer, I'll have my hands full and budget tight. But I am going to try to make it. Anyone else interested? I know Eric and some of the 7 guys from CS were interested.

Myself, Zico and Simon are interested, but if Simon deploys again in March obviously he won't make it. I know there is someone in Lincoln, NE wanting us to stop through and get him on the way. The only problem with all this is if Zico and Simon will have their cars ready in time. I definitely want to do this again though. It's SOOOO much fun.

I have a friend in Des Moines, Iowa who wants to go as well and has been before. Shouldn't be difficult since Lincoln is on the way to Des Moines. He's been before so he knows all the ins and outs of DGRR.

He used to have an RX-8 but sold it and now has an 04 STi he may bring along. It could work out since he could haul our luggage and tools for when we breakdown (we know we will haha)

Otherwise he will roll with me if he doesn't want to roll his STi

No pistons allowed, Frank!

Just kidding, you can be the emergency vehicle for when we break down :)

Also, not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure the place everyone stays at (requirement) rents out cabins for groups. Not sure how many can room in a cabin but I'm pretty sure it's quite a few, so we could probably get most of our group in a single cabin and split the cost equal ways.

This is the place we stay at: http://www.nvnc.com/

Well, after looking online at the Nantahala Village where we stay, they have houses for rent with up to 5 bedroom for about $400 a night. The description also says the living room has a huge sectional and two big screen TVs, and a private deck.

I think we could easily get 7 people in this house, so for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) that works out to only about $114 per person for the whole stay. I think we could probably get more than 7 in there too, which would obviously lower the total cost.

There aren't too many houses available for rent, so we need to act quickly if we want one.

I went in 2006 and our group stayed in a mansion like they had the year before and Phil was pissed because we didn't stay with the rest of the group in the motel.

And Zico wants to trailer his car, so I'm not sure how we're gonna work this haha.

Really, trailer? That's weak! Half the fun is getting there (and back).

The "mountain cabin" house I mentioned is on the village resort, so I think it's fine that we stay there. Otherwise they have normal rooms that go for about $120 a night, and 2 guys can easily stay per room. I jut think it would be more fun to get a big house and split the cost.

I'm 90% on going, I calculated about $300-$350 for fuel, plus lodging and food. I should be able to do it for under $550 so it's not as expensive as I originally thought.

Yeah I'd rather drive it too but I figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a trailer along just in case haha. I'd rather all stay in a bigger place too.

That's 3 cars we'd need to trailer...that's a pretty big trailer or multiple trailers. I have a truck that can haul but not sure if it could make the drive LOL. Plus, with a trailer it would probably get 9mpg on the highway, and would top out at 55mph haha.

And someone has to drive because you can't ride in the cars while they're on a trailer, unless you plan on flying out or something lame like that.

OK, I might have a line on a trailer and possibly a crew cab truck. My Fiance's grandpa has a Dodge Ram Cummins turbo diesel tow rig and a 5th wheel trailer for hauling his tractors he takes to tractor pull competitions. If we're serious we could probably borrow this.

what we did for asb is pretty much rented a whole car transport. since there were about 5 or 6 of us, it was only about 500-600 each. this is from texas to socal
