Yes... unequivocally yes. Unless one of our tuning gurus can help you. You can mess up so much if you tune incorrectly, it's better to just have a pro do it.

Who are the Tuning Gurus?

Postby Milcre » Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:14

Who here would qualify as a tuning guru? Also does the cobb pro tuner have maps or are can they create customizable maps for this dp/rp setup? I also want to be able to go back to stock setup so if I get it tuned will they flash my ecu and if so will I be able to restore to stock with the cobb accessport?

Yes, you can restore back to stock after tuning with an Accessport. You'll need to buy one if you don't already have one since you can't just borrow one from someone else's car as they are locked to your car.

We have a couple knowledgeable tuners in the club but I'm not sure if any of them have tuned a DISI yet. I got my pro-tune at MAC Autosport for $350. I think they are $370 now. You can try an OTS (off-the-shelf) map but it's a generic map that isn't specific to your car and will not be optimized. I had all the parts for a stage 2 OTS map but still hit load cut all the time until I got a pro-tune.

Tuning

Postby Milcre » Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:14

I plan on purchasing an accessport next month or June. My main question was "is the tune done at the shop using the accessport as the tuning device?" I'm relatively new to tuning as I've done mostly bolt ons in the past and the last car I worked with that was simliar to tuning was "chipping" my old VW GTI. I appreciate everyone's feedback since I'm new at this.

Your car will run like butt without a tune. We can install the parts for you, but you have to understand that you won't be happy with it until you get it tuned.

Yes, the AP is the tuning device that plugs into your car's diagnostic port.

Try Harvey the Boost Creep. I think Dave (chickenwafer) had his turbo-RX8 done there. I have a few friends that were incredibly happy with his work. He does street tuning and will do tens of pulls on your car. He may be expensive but he's worth it.

I tuned my old turbo RX-8 myself, just used Harvey's dyno because he's the closest around.

As far as tuning DISI motors I am not the tuning guru there. I know tuning but I've never tuned one some I'm not 100% comfortable with them, yet.

Anyone know how to install a methanol injection kit? I've been itching the buy one lately, but I can't find good instructions online to attempt installing it on my own.

I've installed a bunch, it's pretty easy, but can be a time consuming process because of locating placement of the pump and/or the tank.

I'm a big fan of utilizing the factory windshield washer tank because it keeps it OEM looking and functional.

I know Dave already saw this coming lol, but DO NOT use Harvey at Boost Creep. I don't blame him for killing my car because it looks as though it spun a bearing, but he certainly didn't help matters by looking at my blinking water temp gauge (it blinks when it's overheating) and the reading of about 230-240 and saying "what's this?" SERIOUSLY?! You're a freaking tuner and you don't know that overheating is bad for an engine??

It also kinda pissed me off that he poked fun that the engine failed and one of the oil coolers was ripped off while towing. That did not make me very happy. I never did sign any documents releasing him from liability but like I said, I don't blame him (or Dave since he hadn't even started tuning yet lol) for blowing my engine so I didn't ask him for any money, nor will I go after him for anything. But I refuse to go back there.

Yeah, don't use him. I never will again. I'd pull my own teeth first...all of them.

And re: the water injection kit, I installed one in my car. It's actually pretty easy, the hardest part I think is finding somewhere to put everything haha. Ideally you want the reservoir above the pump to aid by using the gravity, but I doubt it's that big of a deal if it isn't set up that way. I have my reservoir in the hatch, the pump is mounted against the back wall of the hatch down in the spare tire well, and I currently have the lines running inside the car along the door sill because the lines are plastic, but once I switch to stainless steel braided or hardlines I will run them under the car. And I'm injecting windshield washer fluid anyway, so it doesn't freeze in the winter and blow my pressure sensor again like the distilled water did LOL. Do some research into what kit would be best for you, i.e. what features you want and go from there.
