Learned a valuable/costly lesson

Postby erod550 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 9:14

Take the lids off your gas cans when you store them. I didn't and they were still sealed and when it got cold, this happened. :\

These things are like $16 a piece. Since they are so mangled I don't think they'll be good anymore right? I doubt they'll just pop right back into place if I start filling them.

They should expand if you keep them sealed and it warms up.

Same thing happened to my one that I have some years ago. I still have been able to use it without any problems, but it has never recovered its original shape.

Seal it, put it in boiling/hot water... should pop right out.

Hmm, cool, I will try those suggestions instead of just tossing them. Thanks.

If they're not sealed then there's not a specific volume of air in there that will contract in the cold. If I'd just loosened the lids it wouldn't have happened. Oh well, I'll know for next winter.

Had one outside in the summer and it did just the opposite. Looked like it was gonna blow. I would open them to release the negative pressure inside, then seal them back up to warm them up. It will allow for extra pressure once it warms up and help them pop back into shape.
