New school can’t be Cougars because middle-aged women might be offended

And even more puzzling "why would the board even offer "Cougars" as a potential mascot choice if it wasn't prepared to accept it? That lack of logic is positively baffling."

Truth!!!

The "real" reason the board gave was that the school's colors (blue/white) combined with the name Cougars was way too similar to the BYU Cougars. Believe what you will...

When you're coming up to a light and there's a lane open, but then someone in another lane jerks over into the open lane at the last second before you get up to the front. Then they don't go any faster than the person they were behind. It's like why even get into the empty lane if you're not going to go faster than the person you were behind anyway?

Opposition to the “Cougars” focuses on a concern that the mascot, combined with the school’s blue/white/silver color scheme, will be too similar to Brigham Young University. Many also have commented on the negative double entendre of the word “cougar.”

Guess it's a combination of the two.

Yeah no kidding. I hate this crap too.

This reminds me of when they were talking about renaming our highest rank LOL. OK, so naming the highest rank in the AF "Chief" is somehow offensive now? LOL Gimme a break.

And my hometown college renamed their teams from Indians to Redhawks or something like that several years ago. Were Native Americans even complaining??

Hmm, the animal has been named as such for a long time, now a board is afraid of the street slang connotation.

"Yeah but the animal can't get it's feelings hurt". SMH

I agree with you. Again I ask, have middle aged women been complaining? It seems to me they've taken to the name quite well actually. How about the TV show NAMED Cougar Town?
