Still have the studded tires on my Miata, and they make a huge difference in being able to get going again after stopping on a hill in snow/ice. I love them.
I would happily go back to my summer shoes though if you'd like to come over and do the swap. I'm still not supposed to be lifting things after surgery so that's why I haven't gotten to it yet. I hate driving on them on dry roads as much as you hate seeing people driving on them on dry roads, but considering my Miata is my snow car and I'm going to do everything I can to make it safer/easier to drive on snow/ice, I don't feel bad about using studded tires in winter. No, I may not "need" them, but are they helpful? You bet they are.
What grinds your gears?
Have you tried regular snow tires? Snows made a great difference on the RX8. Never needed studs. Growing up in northern NY, I either drove a 2wd pickup or a large RWD car. Heck, we never even put snows on those and still managed to get around with relative ease.

You sound like Chris. "I can get around just fine in my RX7 in the snow on bald summer tires." Why would I not use tools available to me to make it easier on myself. Yes, I can get around just fine in the snow for the most part on the tires I run in the summer time (Falken Ziex 912). And I'm sure on a set of regular snow tires I could get around fine too, but I'd still have issues getting started up hills again after stopping, and would have to be even more careful about the tail getting away around curves. The studded tires just make it easier.
Besides, I put like 1000 miles a year total on my Miata since I started working from home and not all of that is even on the studded tires so I don't think I'm responsible for destroying anything.

I never drive in the winter with bald summer tires. I use a good all season tire.

My Car Blog
Yea I've gone plenty fast on non-studded winter tires in my former FWD cars and not been the least bit concerned. What prompted the studded tires on the Miata was driving on the highway on the all-seasons and going about 55mph and having the ### end just go out on me when I was going straight. I don't know if the frame isn't straight or what, but my Miata is hella unstable at medium to high speeds in the snow. I had an alignment done and that didn't help. So that's actually the biggest reason I went for as much traction as I could possibly get.
Now it doesn't really matter as I just don't go anywhere when it snows unless I have to, and if I do have to it's somewhere in town and I don't have to go above 40mph in the snow. And actually the studded snow tires didn't really fix the stability issues on the highway, but I'd already bought them and the tires are still basically like new so I'm not going to be replacing them anytime soon. They'll be my winter tires until they start rotting from old age, because I don't think I'll ever put enough miles on them to wear out the tread.

people who pull up and honk their horn when picking up friends.
drives me crazy, i have a group of friends who ALWAYS do that, even when i'm outside waiting on them, STFU!
Looking for a good way to tell them to stop, (especially since they are my DD)
