*not quoting that whole thing*

I read that same 240 vs. toybaru article today while I was getting an alignment on the F-150. (note that this is the first time in the last 7 years I've paid to have someone else work on my car, kind-of weird)

You're right on all accounts Jimmy, I think this car is being given more praise than it deserves. Honestly, I think it's overpriced for what you receive, the suspension is no where near the refinement of the RX8, and other than having decent torque; it still has the same power. What gives?

That question has bothered me lately, and the only answer I can imagine is the impact from Keanu Block and his Boulder Camry (when he drove a Camry) created in the "Stance Subie nation." Every poser jumped on the Subie band-wagon and in their blissful ignorance believe that anything with a flat-four is better than the rest.

The other answer is that right now, there really isn't another "driver's car" for sale. No, the Miata does not count! This leaves the magazines with naught but one car to write about. That and the 8 was forgotten about long ago as nobody really cares about the rotary engine past what they've been told by who-knows-who about its abysmal reliability and fuel consumption. The suicide doors, I don't believe, helped it win favor with our generation either. (even though hatches with a mirrored setup are the hot ticket right now)

Oh well, just take solace in the fact that in a couple years, 8's will be so cheap that you will be able to buy them for pennies to build a 13B-RE/REW swap that will give you the performance of an FD with the creature comforts of a modern car

Hit the nail on the head, jimmy. I've been feeling that way about the FRZ/BRZ thing ever since I heard about it. The number one complaint of the RX8 was its lack of power. Um, it has MORE than this Toyarubu thing and weight in withing a couple hundred pounds.

I feel the FRS exist in a category that it doesn't need. There was a good article on this on thetruthaboutcars.com. Basically, it has a slightly larger trunk than a Miata, but it does have a minimal backseat which the Miata doesn't (not that it's really useable anyways).

The new v6 Mustang is another option for buyers in the category. Only weights a few hundred more but more than 100bhp (305bhp rated) easily make up the weight difference, and then some, plus it has a slightly larger back seat and an even larger trunk. Similar fuel economy as well. And they are priced within a couple hundred bucks of each other. For me, I would take a v6 Mustang over this FES/BRZ coupe any day of the week.

I think the RX8 was always unfairly stacked up against the 350/370z, g35, Evos, STIs, etc, when it wasn't the same car. The general public fears what it doesn't understand, and we know rotary engines are largely misunderstood. Mazda probably could have done better to promote the rotary engine and it's uniqueness, but you can never overcome the general consensus that somehow comes about like an echo chamber with everyone saying the rotary will grenade eventually. I don't want to turn this into a rotary reliably argument, because we could on forever, but that just really bothered me.

Anyways, thanks for bringing it up jimmy, I was just thinking about it too so it's kinda funny.

Yeah I saw it yesterday as I passed it,
Before I left I even looked at a map and it looked like the exit was near yosemite, (even did satellite view) So I didn't take that first DTC exit thinking there would be a one closer to Yos... I guess I should stop looking at my nav and read the signs :) grind out-
