Rocky mountain Solo "Speed Train"

Postby Shadowden » Fri May 18, 2012 9:14

Is anybody else planning to do the Speed Train session at PPIR on June 9th? I won't be able to pull off the autocross the next day, but filled out my registration for the driving school. It seems like a really good opportunity to set yourself up for a very succesful first autocross if you haven't done one. Since I am as new as it gets, I'm looking forward to getting a lot of instruction.

I'll be working it as an instructor or safety steward. The school's are a great value.
A tip- have an instructor drive your car on the mini course with you riding. It's usually a revelation to see and feel what your car can really do. You can also watch their inputs, and where they are looking. When I do coaching rides, I'm mostly watching the student's "eyes and hands".

RPM Motorsports just north of 6 ave on Wadsworth. They sell snell 5 & 10 helmets to autocrossers at a discount. Have bought open and full face between $70 - 100. Let them know you are with RMSolo and were told about the "discount". The last helmet we bought was marked $160 and we were out the door for $91. They are the bike shop practically under the light rail bridge over Wadsworth.

What brand are the loaner helmets you guys have? I used one the last time instead of my moto full face and found it to be rather comfortable.

The loaner are a mixed box of helmets. I know at least a few are Bell. Best bet is to just simply try some on. Amanda's first helmet was a medium that ended up getting loose as it wore in. She switched to a tighter small full face helmet. As that has been breaking in, she says the fit and comfort is perfect.

Amanda and I will be at the school to help. If they have the room, I might even take a shot at being a student. Amanda did this class last year and really improved her racing! I need to try and catch back up. It is embarassing to have my 16 year old daughter drive faster than I can.

I can't spare any more tire for this event. I've looked quite a bit for some reasonably priced tires to abuse, but haven't come up with anything.
