MX5 muffler delete

Little project for Saul.
Started with some plate and cut out a thin flange:

Cut a hole in it big enough for the exhaust tip Saul provided (he bought one way too big cuz he wanted that aggressive look).

Put the pipe thru the hole with a slight down angle to prevent bumper melting and welded the backside. Ground the weld smooth so it should seat up well. This step was a little difficult, the pipe tip was very very thin and almost all chrome, the weld puddle was a little hard to control.

Weight of his old stock muffler 16.6 lbs according to my bathroom scale:

Weight of the delete tip <1 lbs:

Nice work! You did a great job getting that flange opening smoothed out and clean. What wire are you running in your mig? I'm running 0.023 so it is supposed to work a little better on thin material. The chrome finish is definitely a hurdle to overcome.

Great functional piece completed.

Nice! You should do a quick vid of the stock muffler sound vs muffler delete.

Will do.

This is mainly for track/autox. After the event, the regular (I say this cuz it's not stock either) one will be put back on.

Think I'm using .030" wire. not positive though. This thing might be obnoxious loud, gonna drown out the sound of my popping and banging when I chase ya!

I might need to start looking for a straight thru midpipe in the spring/summer🙉

Chris, It's ok if it's loud. I will only have this on when at the track -- gotta shave that weight! :P I've already got the muffler back on the car. It's a pretty quick swap.

I was unable to get recordings going 4500+ rpm but it actually sounds better (still loud) at the higher end of the tach.

That is how my T1R cat back is. It's pretty in vtec.

You had mentioned lugs before, but those look like through bolts. Can you exchange with the car on the ground? Probably doesn't matter since you will have it up changing wheels/tires anyway.
