Removed the inline glass fuel filter today at lunch. We drove the Cougar out to dinner yesterday, and it was bogging down something fierce. I figured before I looked that the fuel pump, I'd remove that and see what happened. I already had some fuel hose in the garage.

It runs noticeably better. No bogging at all anymore when I get on the gas. Before, there was always a little hesitation. I like free fixes.

I changed the oil yesterday. I still need to properly tune the carb. There are still a lot of little adjustments to make to the car, actually. I've done most of the maintenance and fix/repair stuff. New alternator and belt, new starter, new battery cables, new plugs and wires, new fuel filter. I should replace all of the other hoses, and verify gearbox fluid, diff, etc, etc.

I'm getting to the point that I'm unsure if I'll ever do the body work on the car. I like it, it's fun (at times) to drive. I think doing the body work to a level that I'd accept that it looks good would end up getting me underwater when I do sell it. We'll see. Lately, I've been looking at other projects to tinker with. 1st gen 4runners look fun...

I would say have the front fender replaced and painted to match the current car color. I know that wouldn't be perfect and it isn't your ideal color but than at least it would be a 20+ foot car.

I have a tuning box and most everything to get that motor set.

Yeah, I should've been more specific...I'd do at least that, and not strip/repair the rest of the car. Especially since I have the pieces for it.

I've got a stumble at what I'm guessing is about 3000RPM. It idles well, and is fine under WOT below and above that 3000-3500RPM point. Get above 3500, and it pulls really strong. I have no records on ignition system ever being touched. That said, carb tuning is crazy voodoo to me. I just need fuel injection.

I also think my leak is on the oil pan, although I haven't had a good chance to look closely yet.

That is usually the rpm the secondaries kick in. You either have a rich spot or a lean spot. What kind of carb is it?

I got a chuckle out of this yesterday...my nephew was over and looking at the front of the Cougar. He comments on how small the headlights are. I was a bit confused, as the headlight doors were down. He thought the small turn indicators below the bumper were the headlights. I lifted the doors, and he was awed by that. Of course after that, all he wanted to do was check out the Honda.

I lubed everything on the chassis this morning. I have a couple that are giving me some issues filling them (lower control arms) that I'll mess with when I have more time this weekend. I need to pick up some more chassis lube to finish those up. I'm also going through and verifying everything is torqued after putting 100 miles (if that).

After relubing everything, my front end shake is gone. Wee.

I got the cat running fairly well this weekend. Picked up a vacuum gauge and tuned it that way. My exhaust leaks need to be addressed. I tried some of that Tiger Patch, but it's so close to the manifold flange, there was just no getting everything clean enough, so that didn't work out great. I'd call it a 3/10 "fix". After running it fairly hard yesterday, ooof, oil was basically just pouring out. My guess is it's coming from a lot of places, but I'd bet the bulk is from the intake manifold, given that the PO had just swapped out the intake/carb shortly before he sold it.

The only realistic way to clean the engine and maybe use a dye is to pull it. It's incredibly grimy. I now need to get the garage in order and get ready for an engine pull in the fall. I just need to determine my engine path at this point. I'll do a compression test and see how my engine is doing and go from there. I need to research the T5 swap as well, because pulling this engine/tranny combo, the 3 speed isn't going back in.
