My New Project- FFR 818

Postby coloskydiver » Wed Nov 28, 2012 9:14

Well I am happy to announce that I have officially & technically begun a new car project. It is the Factory Five 818 project that is a mid engine roadster that weighs in at 1800 lbs and uses a Subaru WRX drive train. There is a lot of buz around this car and many people getting in line to build one of these cars.

One of my buddies just got done with a WRX wagon build and had a donor car that he needed to sell and it has everything I need to to build an 818. I was torn and not necessarily ready to part with my V8 Miata but after a few weeks and hours on the internet, the 818 is what I want.

The plan is to part the donor car and start on the engine build. This will probably take some time and am not in a big hurry. The goal is to build a reliable 350-400 WHP 2.0 turbo engine and have it ready to go once the kit is actually bought. The Miata will go up for sale to finance the build but still want to play some more before I let her go. If anyone here or any one you know is interested in a V8 Miata rocket ship, send me a PM.

Here is what the 818 looks like a few videos from the net.

you won't have to wait till it is done to see me at the track. Next time you go hit me up. As long as you give me a weeks notice I can pretty much make it work and can show you what a real Miata looks like :).

Dayum, would hate to see your miata go, will you sell it for G's or K's?

I am tossing around a few options to make it marketable based on what someone is looking for. What I mean is there will be one price for as it sits currently and would include an additional track set of rims/tires and all the Miata Parts I have and than a few stripped down options to get a lower price point. Many of the parts I have on that Miata will fetch more off the car than on and like anything, I will need to find the right buyer. Regardless of what happens, whoever pics her up will be getting a hell of a deal. Like all cars, for what I have into it, it will sell for much less.

Congrats on the new/future build. I haven't a doubt in my mind that it will be a sweet, sweet ride.

The miata is one helluva car for those who haven't seen it.

Gotcha. Also there's a customer appreciation day coming up in Dec. If i weren't going to be out of town I'd jump on that free trackday deal in a heartbeat.

STI? I thought I read the STI was incompatible.

I told you about my friend the Factory Five dealer, right? Let me know if you are interested in talking to them.

It looks like it'll be fun :)

The STI is compatable as long as if falls in the correct model year range. The years you can use is a 2002-2007 WRX and includes the STI. If you think about it, there very little diffetence in the engine as a whole. It still mounts in the same location, same size, ect. Just a larger turbo, displacement in some instances, tunning and larger intercooler. I am looking for a 2006-2007 WRX with 2.5 and 6 speed.

Here is a link to the latest picks from Factory Five of one they built.

As you say, the engine is the same, the turbo is tweaked. I think the problem is that the drive train and suspension are different. STIs are a couple inches longer in wheel base, and usually have slightly different suspension geometry. Since those parts are also needed, they probably have different dimensions than the WRX

https://www.factoryfive.com/kits/project-818/what-you-need/
"The parts needed from a Subaru Impreza model years 2002-2007 (except STI models**)
**STI’s drivetrain parts differ too much from a standard Imprezza or WRX for use as a single donor for the 818 platform."

Its possible the website it out of date, or maybe you just need to get one or two specific parts from the WRX, I'm not sure. I'd hate for you to run into issues.

So anyways, good luck, I hope everything goes well for ya. You have me considering one now. I'd place an order tonight if there was a rotary option :D
