I installed a new to me steering wheel that I pulled out of a 2002 C70. I cleaned it with Simple Green and a horse hair brush to remove the oils and I couldn't believe how nice it was. I used leather conditioner on it to protect it. I have an under seat 4x50 amp and a wood grain shift knob shipping today. The amp is required for the sc-901 radio and my existing shift knob it broken. To finish up the interior, I will just have more headliner cleaning, dash wood grain vinyl, door panel vinyl inserts, and maybe new door speakers.

I really can't believe this is the same car.

I haven't touched the car in weeks. I did rework the rear armrest so I now have cup holders in the rear. I haven't started any of the big projects because I've been working on my truck.

I'm in the process of getting a parts car to take the motor from and finally get this car done.

That wagon reminds me of something cool I read recently about a British Touring Car Championship team "cheating" the rules in the 90s to make their Volvos have some of the most powerful engines in the class.

https://www.facebook.com/STAVTECH/posts/882994995210357

Another of the wild ways race teams go to extremes to bypass the word of the race regulations is the Volvo BTCC engine in the 90s.
The head, modified in the conventional way the rules "seemed" to allow, produced 260bhp, about 25bhp down on most the cars in the series at the time- Not enough to be competitive.

So TWR, who ran the works team at the time, set to work studying every letter of the rules to find a way around it, and they did, in maybe the most complex way ever!

The BTCC rules basically stated they had to use the production cylinder head. They could port them, they could fit bigger valves, but they couldn't weld extra metal on to in inside the heads, and they couldn't modify the valve angle either.

But it didn't say you couldn't cut stuff off, they didn't say you couldn't add metal by bolting it on, and didn't say what angle the head had to sit on the block.

So they did ALL of that and a lot more!

They pretty much chopped the whole top half of the head off, and bolted on a custom billet setup to house the big valves and cams the rules allowed.

The standard valve angle wasn't ideal either, too steep, but that wasn't allowed to be changed. But as the angle that the head bolted to the block wasn't mentioned in the rules, they cut a wedge out of it, so what was left of the production part was tilted in a way that allowed a shallower exhaust port and steeper inlet port design.

There was enough of the Volvo head left in the middle to still pass the regs as a 'Production' head, but this new 13.5:1 compression engine made 325bhp- 65bhp more than before, and pretty much the most powerful engine in the field.

The legality of it was queried after every race, and every time it was proven to be within the word of the regulations.

The main stupid thing was the production head rules was intended to keep costs of the series down, but instead of allowing a custom head design, which would've been 15k for the original then a few hundred each time to re-produce, they were spending £15k each time chopping up and wildly modifying £200 production heads!

I always liked that picture.

The new car is a V70R.
- Engine: Volvo B5234 T6 2.3L
- Output: 236hp, 210WHP
- Max Torque: 229 ft lbs at 2400-5400 rpms ( 310 Nm/40-90 rps)
- 16T turbo
- 16" Meteors wheels
- 4-spd auto and Selectable Shift Modes (Economy/Sport/Winter), final drive ratio: 2.54
- Traction Control System (TRACS) - Standard
- AWD
- 3,788 lbs.

The plan is for right now just getting the car going so I have a DD. At some point in the near future, I have plans to do some mods. I would like to be somewhere in the 240 to 250whp range.
http://vasttuning.com/

Basically the two cars are the same except the motor, front bumper, seats, door panels, etc. So all intents and purposes I will have an R except for the front bumper. I do plan on getting an R bumper at some point.

The parts car. It's a sad sight to see a wrecked Saffron but I get some really good parts. The car was purchased by the previous owner as a project with a blown motor. He installed a motor out of a wrecked 1998 V70R at 152k miles and went completely through it. Timing belt, drive belt, PCV, cam seals, main seals, oil pan seal, rebuild turbo, intake seal, exhaust seal, etc. The car now has 180k miles. He also was in the process of changing the interior from beige to black, all he had left was the head liner and the dash. Other than the headliner, I would give the interior a 9 out of 10. He also did a bunch of upgrades, 302mm front brakes, vented rear discs, IPD sway bars (not verified yet), and LED lights in the interior including gauges. I'm sure there is more I haven't found yet. The previous owner is the owner of an independent Volvo shop in Denver.

He let his son drive the car, he pulled out into traffic at a red light, and was hit.

Oof, man, that was a pretty car. I love Saffron on the wagons. That and the cream yellow 850R (T5-R) are probably my favorite Volvos. My father in law's friend that works at Martin Truex Jrs race shop here in Denver has a yellow 850 T5-R sedan that needs work, although i don't know what kind of work. He's got it in his shed back in NC.

I'm going to get these cars reoriented in the driveway on Friday and start digging into the saffron car to see what I'm going to need to get this project done in two weeks. I also want to take a close look at the transmission fluid of both cars so I can make the final decision on whether I'm swapping the entire front drivetrain or just the motor.

I know I will need:
-motor oil
-coolant
-oil filter

Most likely:
-radiator hoses
-intake gasket
-exhaust gaskets
-tranny fluid
-spark plugs

Right now I'm just trying to get the car on the road reliably. I don't have the time or the money to do a bunch of extras as much as I would like to do everything at once.

Future mods:
-Vast Tune with Coil On Plug conversion http://vasttuning.com/
-iPD Reverse Intercooler Piping (RIP) Kit https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4673/113685-reverse-intercooler-piping-rip-kit-for-1995-1998-p80-850-c70-s70-v70-turbo-models
-Volvo NA throttle body with 960 plate and ported intake (turbo TB is 2.75" vs NA at 3")
-custom 3" downpipe with magnaflow cat
-custom duel exit exhaust
-V70R front bumper and bumper grilles

I did some more investigating of the saffron. It has a k&n air filter and ss brake lines.

The front sway bar is about 22mm so it's stock. The rear sway bar is about 23mm vs my awd being about 20mm. Ipd lists their bars at 25mm front and 23mm rear.

Stiffer rear sway will help get the rear a little more lively, cut understeer, right?

Let me know if you need a go-fer for that swap.

Yes you are right. This car is basically a FWD with rear assist. From what I'm told, if you install both the upgraded front and rear sway bars you end up with better cornering but still have the understeer. Just doing the rear helps cut the understeer quite a bit and makes the car drive more neutral. Adding a strut brace in the front also helps the car a ton so that will be on the future list.

I could use all the help I can get. The only thing is that I will be doing this swap starting next Wednesday the 27th and hopefully finish Friday. I'm going to be getting the cars all setup this Friday so I can just start the work first thing in the morning Wednesday. It will be loads of fun doing this in the cold.

I have all the filters on there way and I will be picking up the oil and coolant Friday. I'm hoping for a smooth swap but I know how things usually don't work that perfect.
