I'm looking to replace/upgrade the Ford factory stereo in my 2000 F150. I'm pretty "value-oriented," especially in this case. I'll probably install it myself using kits.

Anyone have suggestions on reputable places to buy?
I'd like to avoid external amps.

https://www.crutchfield.com/ is great option for DIY- competitive prices, and they include decent install kits and instructions. Some vehicles (almost certainly your truck) even have install videos on the site.
I'm partial to Pioneer Alpine and Kenwood
If you have an iPhone, definitely get a HU with an interface for it.

Do Amazon vendors typically include kits? If not, are they still cheaper when you factor in kits and harnesses? Do they include vehicle specific disassembly instructions and any specialty tools needed (DIN keys)?
There's "cheap", and there's "inexpensive".
I always shop for "inexpensive"- got my HU at Crutchfield per it being cheaper with a (quality) kit and harness. Got my other gear from Amazon when install parts weren't a factor.

I have had great service from crutchfield even years after purchase. I too like the install/uninstall info they provide. Unfortunately, when I gotr my last headunit for my avalanche, I had to buy all the bundles seperatey to make things work, but that is how it would have been with anybody.

That was a Pioneer Avic f700bt. I was looking at navigation headunits recently, and there are some awesome ones out there. I tend to like the single din versions that slide out and then rotate up. That way when you aren't using it, it looks like nothing special.

Ironically, Chris' first suggestion - Alpine CDE-121 - is $112 on Amazon and cheaper from Crutchfield at $100! Both with free shipping, neither with install kit. Crutchfield wants $35 for kit and wiring, so I'll see what includes the kits (from both Amazon and Crutchfield).

Chris is correct on price and I agree with Jamie - I'm willing to spend a little money to make my life a lot easier.
