last night i went to taco bell, (the car was all warmed up and at proper operating temp) and when i got back on to Broadway, 1st gear was fine, then i don't know if i missed a gear or what but i thought i was in 2nd gear and i kinda gunned it (to try and cross 4 lanes before i-25) and it just revved and redlined but didn't move, then the car stunk, BAD, i was only a few blocks from home so i drove it the rest of the way and it drove fine, but the smell awful,
I looked at the engine last night and didn't see anything, but the weird smell was so bad i could barely tolerate being that close to it for too long...

This morning i open the hood and didn't really see anything, no stains underneath either and i started the engine and test-drove it, the smell is barely there, but still there, my garage still stinks too...

did i break something? what should i look at? what should i look for?

That's what I thought a first but the smell is coming from the engine, and the car is shifting fine today... I really think my dumbass shifted from 1st to 4th

No slippage at all today and ive been testing it a lot both city/highway

being a FWD, the tranny is right next to the engine under the hood. so the smell would be coming from under the hood.

You may have just overheated the clutch and not completely destroyed it. Usually you will feel the clutch slit when the car is pushed hard. You probably killed some of the life of the clutch but not killed it completely.

It would be pretty difficult to go from 1st to 4th, plus it would just bog down immediately-- rather than going to redline...right?

Clutch. Yes, that's my final answer.

cluth didn't grind or anything but maybe that's it... i was worried maybe turbo-seal or something, tail pipe isn't smoking either

clutch for sure. Probably did a 1-4th like others suggested and the clutch was slipping.

x5 or whatever on clutch. An overheated clutch will smell sort of like really hot brakes and the smell can linger for a surprisingly long time.

I did that to my friend's 2011 STi when I tried my first AWD launch, lol. Note: You can't just rev to 6k and dump it.

As long as it's driving fine now I wouldn't worry too much about it. Clutches wear out and can be replaced. I definitely don't think it's anything to trade in the car over.

Yup, you burned the clutch. Its inevitable to make that mistake at some point. The stock clutch is pretty good on the MS3 so as long as you don't do it too many more times, you won't notice a difference in performance.

ditto. Forgot to mention that part... but as stated above, you will be fine and never notice a difference if this was a one time deal.

cool thanks guys, definitely sounds like what it is... especially the burn-brakes-smell part, fing nasty!!! i hate that smell. trying to let it air-out as much as i can now
