Mazdaspeed Cold Air Intake (v1 or v2)?

So Cobb just released a whole slew of v200 Maps for the MS6, complete with subsets for a variety of Manufacturer CAIs. Mazdaspeed is listed twice, with a category for both CAIv1 and CAIv2.

I got my Mazdaspeed CAI from wyosaint some time ago, but in all honesty, I have no idea how to tell if it's a Version 1 or 2 intake. Anybody have any thoughts on how to determine this?

Mel, you still out there? Any idea?

I think the V2 has the MAF straightener. I remember Mazdaspeed had lean issues with the first version and added the straightener to fix it.

If you don't have a straightener just pick up one of THESE

Incase you didn't know, AEM makes the Mazdaspeed intakes.

The intake got put in a couple years back by a mechanic, so I don't know if it came with a straightener, but if I had to guess, I'd say that it did not. I clicked the link to the piece you referenced, and I don't recall seeing anything like that inside the piping, when I picked it up from Melanie. So yeah... My money is on "it didn't come with one".

Can you tell me a bit more about why you recommend that I get one, and where it goes, if/when I do? If it's down by the filter end, it's a PITA to get to, so I'll probably skip it. If it's something that I can slip into the CAI from within the engine bay, maybe I'll consider it.

And I was aware about AEM being the producer of these pieces.

The straightener goes around the MAF sensor. I believe you just pull the coupler at the top which is right after the sensor and slide the straightener in (I don't have a MS intake).

I'd recommend getting the straightener because it gives you more consistent MAF readings. Without it, you can get turbulent air around the sensor which can create false readings.

So are the Mazdaspeed intakes identical for the MS3 and MS6? I see the straighter for sale on a few sights, but it's always linked to the MS3 version of the intake, and not the MS6 version. I'm curious if it would even work right, if the parts are potentially not exactly the same. (?)

I kinda figured that if it's "universal" part, that places like The RPM Store would inventory it for under both the MS6 and the MS3 listings, but when you look under Intake accessories, it's only listed for the MS3 version. Hmm?

The plot thickens...

The MAF housing is exactly the same for both cars. I actually got to the straightener link on SU by going through the MS6 intake menu. Check it out for yourself. If you're not sure if it will work, just call either store up and they'll tell you.

I'm guessing since MS3's are still in production, they probably link it to that platform and accidentally forget about the MS6.

Thanks again RichB. I finally opened up one of the V2 maps files itself, and sure enough the meta description reads in-part ".... and a Mazdaspeed CAI intake system w/air straighteners...".

RTFM!

Didn't realize the extent to which you have added to your 6. Should have made you pull it out of the garage for a better look!

V1 mscai car doesn't like v2 maps. It runs LEAN at low load and at a certain point you can feel it switch over and run right. I did the same thing as you, it was dark and I didn't want to look. Loaded v2 and Mazda hated life, I found it weird and changed to v1. All better, maps are good!

Yeah, I didn't try any of the v2 maps, since I've had the intake so long that it didn't seem likely I was holding a "version 2". And you're right! These maps are good! Best OTS one, yet.

Sometime soon for sure! I plan on being at the upcoming BW3 meet, so hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate!
