Postby erod550 » Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:14

Pretty happy with the numbers it put down today...

Uncorrected...

These 5.0s generally dyno between 370-390whp stock so I'm right in that range at sea level. Looking forward to getting some mods real soon.

I dyno'd at MAC, and yes, by comparison my MS3, which had most bolt-ons except I had a TMIC not a FMIC and I didn't have an exhaust mani, put down 250whp/277wtq. It was also about 450lbs lighter, but using the listed curb weights the Mustang has an 11.8 lb/hp ratio and the MS3 had a 12.6 lb/hp ratio (up here), so even with the extra weight it's still faster, not to mention the power in the MS3 wasn't really usable until the top of 2nd gear. I can launch the Mustang from a stop with minimal drama except for some occasional wheel hop which I'm hoping to fix soon. And this comparison is while the Mustang is still bone stock, which it won't be for long. ;)

Being able to launch it is just one of the many things I love about the Mustang over the MS3. It also has a tighter turning radius despite being a larger car, which is awesome. Sucks when you're trying to make a tight U-turn and have to back up cause you can't make it. My SRT-4 was horrible about that.

I will definitely miss the cargo space and the ability to drive the MS3 in the snow, but really those are about the only two things I will miss. I love this car.

As for going to sea level, I am planning a trip to Tulsa Raceway Park this summer to see what kind of times I can run with it at 700' altitude.

Wow, that thing is a beast!! Awesome!

For reference, my brother's LS2 GTO put down 326whp (corrected) on MAC's dyno, and my buddy Dave's Charger SRT-8 put down 340whp on MAC's dyno... those cars are rated at 400hp & 425hp.. granted both are autos, but Jesus, I would say Ford did one hell of a job underrating those new 5.0 motors!!

However, I just test drove a brand new one and it seemed gutless... did you car pick up a good chuck of power after the break-in? Or did it just take a while to adapt to CO's elevation? Just curious... but either way, awesome numbers man!!

I don't think it picked up much power after break-in. Which gears did the one you test drove have? If it wasn't specified it's got the 3.31s and I hear people at sea level even saying it feels kind of gutless, while the people who got the 3.73s rave about them. I have the 3.55s and at times it does feel kind of slow (relatively speaking, of course), but I'm also still learning to drive it. It's a totally different feel from my last couple cars. You can't drive it like a turbo car. As you can see by the graph at 3000rpm it doesn't have that much power. You have to rev this motor to get power out of it. In my MS3 if I punched it at 3k it went. All the torque was there like right now. I don't get that feeling in the Mustang until above 4k.

I'll be raising my redline to at least 7200 (stock is 7000). This graph ends at 6500 because we hit the speed limiter in 5th (~145mph). 5th is the 1:1 gear so that's why we used that one, but it does end up moving pretty quickly at high rpms in 5th, heh. But they are still making power above 7000 and with the intake manifold from the 2012 Boss 302 the power doesn't even drop off going all the way to 7500+. With the stock intake manifold the power does start to drop off a little after ~6500.

I have ordered the first couple parts and will hopefully be able to order the programmer soon. Can't put anything on until I get that. Just waiting on the rep from AmericanMuscle.com to PM me back with a 6% discount code for forum members on a couple other forums. I do plan on doing shorter gears also. It's going to be a really fun car very soon. ;)
