Well my little baby has been feeling under the weather for a couple of weeks and I have been too busy for her. Well let's be honest, no garage and too cold. LOL! So yesterday I finally decided it's time. She's been going through this tempermental issue where all of a sudden I would lose power if I got into the throttle. As any of you with a rotary engine know, that is completely out of character. My a/f gauge was showing her going super lean when this issue happened. So i figured "Stupid carberetors!", I simply thought the floats were sticking and blamed bad gas. This was a rare, intermittent problem. Well the last time I drove it there was no issue, then the next day she wouldn't run if I got into the secondaries, backfire pops and all. yesterday I pulled the carb tops and removed the jets, emulsion tubes and air corrector jets. I cleaned them all with gumout and reassembled. No difference.
So I thought WTF. then I reverted back to my troubleshooting skills and got my ignition testing equipment. One of which is an inductive sensor that tells you if your sparkplug wires have voltage running through them. Trailing and leading on rotor number one were not firing correctly. I thought about it and the ignition is split by trailing and leading, not by rotors. So I knew it wasn't an ignitor or a coil. That left the only part I did not replace when I stuffed the ported engine in there in April....The dizzy cap! So after going to a couple of stores I got a new cap and rotor. She runs better now than ever. In fact I may have to go up a jet size on the secondaries. Moral to the story is, if you have a car old enought for an actual distributor, don't over look $30 worth of parts when it's overhaul time. That pesky cracked distributor cap has not reared it's ugly head on any of rmy vehicles for over a decade! I done boring you now. Just keep this in mind if you have drivability issues.
