Shop Experience - MAC Autosports

Postby ~Barn~ » Wed Nov 18, 2009 9:14

So back on 11/4, I call up a very pleasant girl at MAC named "Shay". I tell her that I have a part I want to buy, and want to see if they have it in stock. As it turns out they don't, but I have a part# for her, and so she calls their vendor to find out if they can get it, and what the cost is, blah-blah-blah... I get the call back within a few minutes, and sure enough they can get the part and I ask if I can pay for everything over the phone with her. Gladly they accept my payment, and she tells me that they'll call me when it's in.

Fast-forward to last week, Friday, 11/13.... Still nothing from MAC or Shay in particular. I figure the part is either on backorder (unlikely), or they've just spaced me out. I call and again talk with a seemingly nice enough guy named "Adam". Sure enough he finds my part and w/out going into too much conversation about the lack of call to me, I tell him I'll go pick it up sometime soon.

So now fast-forward to today, 11/18. I stop by MAC to get my part. They're dealing with another customer before me, and as a side-conversation, the woman asks what today is, as she's writing out her check. Shay tells her that it's the 17th, and I politely interject that today is actually the 18th. She then calls her boss "Bill" into the office to explain to him that she has been writing up all of today's Work Orders as 11/17, and he tells her that this must be due to somebody "not shutting it down properly, last night". If you're scoring at home, these are red flags number 3 and 4, of about 7 total.

So finally it's my turn to deal with these folks, get my stuff, and bail. I tell her that I'm here to pick up a part, and give her my name, and before I say anything about anything, Shay tells me "I wasn't the one who called you when it came in, because I was sick that day."I of course, in turn, tell her that nobody actually contacted me, but rather I called in and talked with Adam who told me they had it. Either-way, not a big deal, but it was a very telling way for her to start the conversation, considering I hadn't even mentioned anything.

Anyway... Finally the part is in my hand, Bill is still hovering around, due to the whole Work Order Date abortion from earlier, and as I'm about to thank them and leave, she stops me to tell me that I owe them a small amount still. She says that I wasn't charged "freight", but that it's only like $2.80 or something. No longer in amazement at this point, I audibly sigh, and tell them that I was under the impression I paid for the part in full when, I ordered it on the phone. Bill then interjects that "Well I still have to pay tax on this.", at which point I'm wondering who is the biggest mouth-breather in this group. Is it freight or is it sales tax?!?

I finally decide to skip down to brass tax and address Bill directly, and tell him that I'd appreciate it if they waive whatever it is they're considering collecting from me, due in no small part, to the fact they never called me to tell me the part was here, and that up until now, nobody had made any mention that I might owe a balance when I come in to pick it up. I stop short of saying "In light of the fact that I may actually consider doing business with you clowns again...."

Bill talks to Shay and they jibber jabber about applying this-n-that discount and charging me cost, and blah-blah-so-on-and-so-forth. Eventually he says.... "It looks like we can get it, so that it's only $0.79." I chuckle of course, and ask them both in as serious a tone as I can muster "Do you really want to charge my debit card seventy-nine cents?" I'll spare you the part where he goes on to question me about whether or not I had cash on me. Image

Well... at the end of the ordeal, they eventually concede to the fact that they've dropped the ball on this transaction, more times than they probably care to have me recount, and quite frankly, if it weren't for me, today would still be Wednesday, November 17th for them.

So yeah.... Consider your tolerance for having your patience tested, before doing business with MAC Autosports. They may verywell be good at the wrench-end of the stuff they do, but outside of that, I wasn't very impressed with what should have been, the simplest of purchases.

Oh yeah... Thanks for letting me vent, too. =)

No, not looking for a tune or anything like that. I had thought about maybe doing one later there, once I talk Eric into selling me his Standback for $400 =) but it wasn't something I had any intention of doing soon.

If I ever end up with an AP, I know who's doing my tune for me. It's already been discussed. Of course, I'll NEVER have the $700 needed for an AP, but a guy can dream, right?

Yes I will say, back in the day when we used to do Dyno meets there, It seemed pretty shady to me to.. I never had my car dyno'd I was just spectating, but when I talked to bill about getting some other things, like CAI, and some Hawk brake pads.. he never wanted to take the time to actually look anything up for me. I even called him 3 times after the meet and gave him my info and never once did I get a call back.. So ya,, in my book,,, they suck and have some bad business ethics..

I had a pretty pleasant experience with them when booking self-tuning dyno time. The woman, Shay, has a somewhat "aggressive" tone, however. It seemed to me she doesn't like small talk and just wants you out of her life as soon as possible. Everyone else, however, was pretty great.

I just got the wrong vibe from the receptionist. She had no clue about my car, and was asking some odd questions when I was filling out paper work for the dyno. They weren't even tuning my car and she was asking what size the fuel injectors were. When I told her there were three sets of differently sized injectors she made a face like I told her I wanted to be her next sperm donor.

Everything in the back of the shop- the wrenches, the dyno, the people- worked flawlessly. Everyone was hard at work, they guys had no issues with me poking my head around in places it probably shouldn't been and touching other cars there. I even helped Nick change the plugs in his FD and we compared tuning tips.

I agree the front-end of the shop needs work, however. Someone more knowledgeable on the phones would be nice. I have called and Nick or Adam has answered and both were very nice as well.

I had my SRT-4 dyno'd there twice and had good experiences both times, other than one of my appointments being delayed due to the person in front of me running way over on their time. I have never tried to buy any parts from them though, or deal much with the front end people. Just called, made an appointment, and came in. Was pretty painless.

I plan on buying my parts online and installing them myself and then taking my car to them for a tune when I'm done. I'll be sure to ask for Nick.

Shay is a retard. They hired her to take care of their appointments and general receptionist duties. Whenever I call over there I ask to speak with Bill, Nick or Adam. They have just been growing a little too fast I think and are now paying for it. It used to be that the shop guys answered the phones and took orders.

Bill can really be a prick, but I think he is jaded by dealing with all the ricers out there. He is really only interested in the unique cars and the people that want to do more than just bolt ons. I have never had a problem with the guy, but I can see how other people have.

I'm sorry you had to learn about their growing pains the hard way.

It's all good, I'm not trying to blacklist the place or anything; just give fair warning to people who maybe havne't done business with them before.

I did find the whole situation a bit comical at first, and then it eventually got a touch agro for me, but eitherway...

I think the main feeling that I wanted to express is that they seem like a place that unless you're an established customer with them, they have a very "egh" approach to serving you. Sure, doing 10's of dollars in business with somebody, isn't the same as doing 100's or 1000's of dollars, but it's often the little things that make all the difference, trying to land those high-$ services and purchases. (?)

Just talked to Shay setting up an appointment for a baseline dyno run tomorrow morning. Want to see what I'm putting down stock before I start adding stuff. She was friendly on the phone, but then I only talked to her for all of 2 minutes and I'm sure she's quite familiar with setting up appointments. It wasn't like I made her go out of her way to actually look something up. The nerve of making her work, lol...

MAC is very hit or miss when it comes to customer service. I have a few good friends who are sponsored by them, and they've always been very friendly to me, but I've never actually had any work done there. I had planned on getting my FD tuned there since Nick (their tuner) owns one. Nick and Adam are both pretty cool, but yeah the shop owner (Bill) can be a total dick. It seems like the only thing he's interested in is charging too much for doing SR20 swaps haha.
