Anyone know what this is?

Hi All,

I bought a used MS6 in November and when I bought it, this thing came with the keys. I thought it was an engine immobilizer, but the other day I forgot it at home and drove to work. My work is 7 miles away so I doubt its that. It has no buttons on it, so it does not seem like a Remote Start system.

Dommo, I brought my car in for an oil change today and this is what I am talking about.

I have never seen that type of key not for any Mazda. I am with Stealth on this one... I think it might be a tracker.... if it were Mazda it would say Mazda on it. And it doesn't look like it as any buttons to do anything but transmit some kind of code. Odd... I am interested to hear what this turns out to be!

Is that red dot an LED? If so, is it ever on?

This is the remote start (and the larger smart key):

Is there an aftermarket alarm on your car?

Oh, that was you? I put a business card in your car after Stefano washed it up. Didn't know you were already a member here. You should have found me and said what's up.

Anyway, what that looks like to me is one of those 'dealer add-ons' that they use to make money on the car. There's really not very much profit in new car sales, so most dealers will add things to the car to build some additional profit. Window tint, clear bras, pin stripes, stuff like that. That looks like one of those generic 'security systems' that some dealers install in their new cars. I can probably find out what dealer sold the car when it was new and we can contact them to ask them about that system.

Shouldn't you be able to tell if there's an aftermarket alarm/security system on it?

It is part of a security system. There is a module in your car. When you get within X number of feet, it detects that thing on your key ring. If you don't have it with you, the car won't start.

THen it is not functioning properly, as he took the car to work 7 miles away and forgot the "thingy" at home.

Thanks for the info guys,

To answer some of your questions, it is only a regular speed 6, not a GT model. Also, the car does not have any kind of a GPS system in it currently. And your question Stealth01: "Is that red dot an LED? If so, is it ever on?" no, i have never seen the light on, kinda wondering if that is because the battery is at a high enough charge that the light isn't on, or if the thing is dead.

Dommo, I bought the car from Sill Terhar Motors in Broomfield. I believe it was a lease to one of the salesmen at there dealership that originally owned it. It could be a cheap aftermarket security system. I have never heard an alarm go off on it, but that isnt saying much. Would you need some info on the car to track its history from me?
