having experienced what the car feels like when it actually has full boost in 3-6th, I would recommend an AP or tuning of some sort. Yay for our altitude... meaning you will hit roughly the same PSI in 1st-6th (about 12-13peak) so you can't feel the magical difference of what 15-16psi feels like in 3rd without tuning

My favorite mod for my speed3 is the ETS TMIC. Definetely added more power than any other mod I've done. Check out this section on Succesfully Modifying a Daily Driven Mazdaspeed 3. Its got some good advice also....

I would also recommend the AP. Opening up the throttle plate on these cars, and the ability to increase the effective redline of the car to the actual redline proves wonders. You can expect up to a 65hp gain above 5500rpm with the AP.

is this whp?....or just engine/crank/theoretical horsepower?
pretty sure it's whp.
With the way cars are designed these days, intakes and exhausts don't net you the same big gains like on an old muscle car. Intakes and exhausts are fairly well optimized and while you will get some power from changing them, it's not much. The real power is unlocked when you start playing with the ECU.
