So just now, coming home, i heard a very strange noise coming from my engine bay.
its a very deep throaty sound, kinda like it would sound if i didnt have the airbox on. but its not coming from my intake, and its on properly.
the sound only seems to come when engaging my clutch. if i have the clutch in and revv the engine, it doesnt make the noise, but as soon as the engine begins to connect with the clutch it makes this noise.
do i need a clutch replacement?
or could it be a transmission problem?
or none of the above?
thanks in advance
Figured someone on here would know best

Based only on this, it sounds to me like it could be the throw out bearing.
Once the clutch is fully engaged, does the sound continue? With the clutch fully engaged, is it engine speed related? Does the clutch slip at all driving up a hill?

sounds like it only has to do with the clutch, if the sound is non exsistent when clutch is disengaged, and starts when your clutch begins to engage, its just a clutch problem...as for what that problem is...i dont know...so i guess im no help other than telling you somthing you could have figured out
might want to take it in and have somone look at it...your clutch may just be on its last leg.

yes it continues when the clutch is fully engaged. and it does seem to be engine speed related, but only until i get up to speed. once im crusing it doesnt make the noise....and i dont really know if it slips when going up a hill...im not that much of an expert in the way that feels. haha
If the clutch slips when going up a hill, the engine speed will increase more than the vehicle speed. When it slips, you'll know.
If it is the throw out bearing, you might as well replace the clutch while you're in there.

okay.
how much would all of that cost?
and would it be safe to drive, just to the mechanic?
No clue on cost but I would guess in the $600 neighborhood. And driving it on a bad throw out bearing isn't a big deal- if that's what it indeed is. How many miles total on the car and presumably the clutch?
Take it to a mechanic so they can properly diagnose the problem.

there are 153,XXX miles on the engine...and i have no idea on the clutch.
and yes, going to the mechanic will definately be on my list.
okay got some great news haha.
had my dad take a look at it, now that he is home. and after we started it, the noise occured everytime the engine was accelerated. he was able to pinpoint that the problem is the exhaust. we are guessing that the pipe has just completely rusted through.
so i get to put a nice exhaust on it now!!
thanks for your help though, Tom.

I was actually thinking exhaust at first from your description of "throaty" but the clutch dependancy threw me off.
What part of the exhaust is rusted? I'm going to be selling my high flow catted mid-pipe soon as well as my ceramic coated OBX 4-1 header.

yeah i was a little confused myself that a clutch would have a throaty sound.... haha thats why i came to CMCZ!
all of it is rusted haha. but mostly the header, downpipe, and some of the piping towards the catalytic converter and muffler.
