Take your time when you are looking and DO NOT BUY on impulse. You need to feel 100% comfortable and well educated before you make a big decision like this. You will be happy with the MS3 but do your research on dealerships and visit them A LOT. Make a point to shop around whenever possible and get to know the people and wait until you can buy the car from the person that helped you the most. And of course has the best car you have found for the best deal. All in all.... take your time. Other than that I don't own an MS3 so I can't help you with the specifics.

LOOK INTO INSURANCE PRICES...Insurance will determine whether your going to be spending 400$ a month total (financing and insurance added together) on this car...or $800 cause your insurance company is very very weary of an 18 year old driving a 260hp sports car with a turbo. Also look used. They are extremely hard to find, but you will save about $7000 if you buy a low mileage used speed3. Sil Terhar has one I was looking at in silver with 30k+ miles for $17,xxx..just an FYI
Basically everything on an MS3 that goes wrong is the same with every other car, other than the MS3 has a turbo. Redlining and shifting hard all the time will kill your clutch and burn out your turbo quickly (remember, turbos spool at over 200k RPM's so making them work hard all the time is a bad idea)...regular maintenance and watching when you 'get on it' will prolong any major problems. Mazdas dont really have many big problems that come up like dodge or ford has (dodge transmissions go out often cause they're on the weak side).

A '09 Speed3 for 15k. Jump on it!!!! Kinda a lot of miles but still. I mean look '04 GT RX-8s are going for 13-16k. You may or may not find an older one for less. This sounds like a to good to be true deal. Think about it. It's still under warranty for (IDK what it is for the MS3) like 3-5yrs 100k miles.

tell your dad to go talk to a mazda mechanic if he needs to feel better...MAZDA SELLS AN INTAKE for the MS3 anyway lol. Or have him look it up to see what it does (cough--lets engine breathe better with less air flow restriction and colder denser air running into the engine--cough) make sure to have a good mechanic check this car out first...like Greek8 said, its a "too good to be true" type deal...and it may be just too good to be in good running order. But 13k miles is really low...ive had my car for 2 months and have 6xxx miles on it already.
and the warranty I think is 3yr/30k miles with an extended upto 75k...if its the same for the MZ3 and MS3

Yes, you can go to any mazda mechanic/shop and talk to them. Even when you test drive the car, tell the guy who your going to buy it from that you want to take it to your mechanic and have him look it over to make sure there are no major problems or problems that will arise shortly. If whoever your buying from doesnt like that idea or says no, then thats a good indicator that there is something wrong with the car. also, find out what intake and down pipe is on the car, for your own knowledge and cause im curious lol. MAKE SURE TO TEST DRIVE for atleast 20-30 of mixed driving...city/highway/hard acceleration, feel how the engine breaks when you drop a gear, listen for any knocking or funny sounds. and if the suspension doesnt feel right (alot of body roll could indicate spent shocks or struts.)
P.S. let your dad know that MS3's depreciate in value VERY slowly. They are a limited production car (only 7,000 in the US each year and 2010 is the last year for the MS3) so your chances of finding a better deal are slim to none, unless a private seller is getting rid of one with 50k+ miles.
