we need to utilize the "rate thread" feature so we can determine which threads are really worthwhile for Barn.

It's because the default action when something is typed into the Address field in most browsers is to perform a search with the default search provider and return the first result. It's the same as typing "CMZC" into Google and clicking "I'm feeling lucky!"

By "most browsers", I mean ones that don't suck. Safari, Opera, Firefox, even Konqueror do this.

Internet Explorer, on the other hand, in it's crusade to be unique (like ignoring W3C standards for coding) first attempts converting your string into a url: "http://cmzc.com" and if it returns 404, gives you the search listing from your default search provider.

This also varies with the default provider. In Firefox, it is http://www.google.com. In some browsers it can be http://www.live.com. The first result on Live Search is not http://www.coloradomazdaclub.com, so you'd instead be directed elsewhere.

Another trick for those of you in non-sucky browsers (and actually, IE might even do this) is type what you're looking for without http:// and .com and instead hit SHIFT+ENTER. For example, type consumerist and then hit shift+enter. It'll automatically prepend http:// and append .com and attempt to locate the page. Opera allows you to change the append, also, so you can SHIFT+ENTER and get [url]http://[your-string].org[/url], etc.
