Oil for speed 6

What is the best oil for a speed 6. Do I need synthetc for the turbo? Also, how man miles can I go before a change. I'm getting different recommendations.

Mazda does not recommend the use of full synthetic oil in the 2.3 DISI turbo. A semi-synthetic i have read is ok to use, but is not necessary. I personally will just be letting the dealer take care of all oil changes so that if a problem ever arises they can not blame anything on oil ect. 5W30 is the correct weight to use in the 2.3 DISI. You will hear many different things about oils. Some swear by full synthetics, while others like myself believe what mazda says and will not be using any sort of synthetic. Its really up to you and what you believe because no one has yet to show any definitive evidence as to one being better than the other.

Oh and i personally change the oil every 3k or 3months. I find it the best that way.

I believe Mazda techs are stupid, and they only know how to follow the book. They do not have expertise in the function of turbo cars, and what is best for each individual application.

I have always used full synthetic, Mobil1 and started out with 5/20, like Mazda says. Since my turbo issue I had in my car, I have done research and learned that the turbo does not like the lightweight oil that Mazda reccomends. It tends to thin out enough to pass into the turbo, creating smoke. I have since changed to Redline 10w30. It is full synthetic, and is designed specifically for turbo vehicles. It is $9/quart, but is highly respected in the fluid world, and in known to be among the best for turbo vehicles.

Redline says you can go 8k with turbo applications, but I will not go any more than 5k miles.

And FYI, you should probably run 5w30 Red Line to get the benefit of the lighter weight oil at cold start.

The Redline 10w-30 replaces standard 5w30. Quoted from Redline:

"Great all-weather viscosity grade for gasoline engines in cars and light trucks that are driven on the street on a daily basis. More power and economy while providing thicker bearing oil films at operating temperature than a petroleum 10W-40. Best choice to replace a 5W-30 or 10W-30, petroleum-based or other-brand synthetic oil if maximum durability is preferred. Acceptable for engines that are occasionally operated in extreme cold weather"

I havent ran it long enough to know how it will affect cold starts, but many others use it and recommend it with no issue. I have another oil change worth of quarts, if need be, I can keep those on the shelf for spring time..

I should clarify that i do not mean the morons who work service at the dealers, but an actual mazdaspeed developer who worked on creating the MS6 and MS3. And i am not claiming to have spoken to this person, but have read of a 3forum member who posted about this subject after speaking to said mazdaspeed engineer.

I've always used Mobil 1 in 5w30. I change oil based on color, between 3k and 5k miles. I've not had a smoking turbo, so I haven't needed to switch to 10w30.

+1 on the 5w30 Mobil 1, had it changed at 500 miles and have never looked back. I do change every 3000 miles as I have a lot of highway miles at high revs.

Have used Mobil 1 on all my Turbo cars.......

I switched to Red Line in my Protege after I found out that Mobil 1 was a blend (which I knew) and contained very little actual synthetic oil (which was why I switched).
