That's right, Mazda has released yet another odd looking concept. Not exactly my cup of tea, but interesting article nonetheless-

This is what I find most interesting:

"New Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid

Compared with the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE, the new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid yields 40% better output, resulting in enhanced acceleration performance and an extended hydrogen-fueled range of about 200km, or twice that of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE. Seating capacity is also increased to give accommodation for five adults along with greater luggage space. The hydrogen rotary engine is changed from a longitudinal to a transverse layout and its intake/exhaust resistance and combustion efficiency are improved to yield high output across a wide range of engine speeds. The hybrid system employed for the hydrogen rotary engine efficiently converts energy from hydrogen combustion into electricity that powers the electric motor. Thanks to progress in electric drive technology, the system realizes high energy-efficiency and a quick response allied with low fuel consumption. Acceleration kicks in the instant you hit the accelerator, creating a direct feeling of power.
Plant-derived Mazda Biotechmaterial*2 is used for interior plastic parts and seat fabrics to accelerate research and development for commercial use."

That information combined with this:

"Next Generation RENESIS (Rotary Engine 16X)

In developing the next-generation RENESIS, Mazda made a thoroughgoing revision of engine dimensions including the trochoid rotor housing, adopting a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) aimed to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds. By employing the Hydrogen RE design policy of a direct injection system and aluminum side housing, as well as various other measures, we are further promoting the rotary engine's merits of light weight and compact size."

Now my questions come into play.... now I know Mazda's former hydrogen powered rotary in Japan was rated at 206bhp when running on gas, and 107bhp when running on hydrogen... and I've found a related article claiming in hydrogen mode, power is up from 107bhp to 147bhp, but I can't find any other information about the gas powered peak power.... but it's nice to hear the next rotary should be going from a 1.3L to a 1.6L, now since it says power will be increased approximately 40%, then for the hydro portion, going from 107bhp to 147bhp would be right in line.... if similar power was found on the gas portion (40% increase) of the motor, power would go from 206bhp to about 288bhp, which is exactly what the RX-8 needs. Let's just hope the next gen rotary is a 1.6L hopefully making a good bit more power [img]http://coloradomazdaclub.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

This seems more like an engineering showcase, which leaves me rather uninterested if it has zero chance to make it into production.

I wonder if they going to discontinue the RX8, because it is not exactly a commercial success. I can understand why people were wowed by rotaries in the 90s due to the massive amount of power they put down with such tiny displacement, but it isn't a viable engine nowadays. It does have many drawbacks, and owning one is more about novelty than anything else IMO.

I hope Mazda keep the rotary alive tho, but they should put the engine in a true sport car IMO.

Now lets hope they bring the Kabura and the 2 to our shores.

Maybe I should have re-named the thread lol... I actually don't give a shit about the concept, only about the new generation rotary motors... but meh, I agree, the concept is fairly ugly.

It looks alot like the car Ace and Gary drive on The Ambiguously Gay Duo.

Everything I've read points to a refresh of the RX-8 for next year or 2010 (debuts at Tokyo this month), and that the 1.6L rotary will power the next iteration of the car. I have yet to see any official power specs on it.

sounds like a great motor, I want one.

I honestly think Mazda should bring back the 3-rotor to compete with the current market. With the way manufacturers have been upping horsepower every year, there's a slew of naturally aspirated 6 cylinders making around the 300 horsepower mark, and even several 4 cylinders making the same power.... now one option would be forced induction, which is a great idea, however, after the large number of blown motors the 3rd gen RX-7 owners experienced, I don't think Mazda is in a hurry to bring back FI to the rotary, or at least not on American shores, where even though people are specifically told not to use less than premium grade fuel, they don't listen..... which always made me wonder, if someone has the money to buy a sports car, why are they to cheap to spring for premium fuel?

Either way, everyone knows rotaries don't like detonation, and frequently destroy apex seals as a result. I think Mazda has the right idea with the NA rotaries, but should bring back motors like the 20B 3 rotor. Since technically rotaries are "stackable", adding another rotor should increase power/torque by 50% approximately.

The 20B is a sexy beast. There are a couple of folks on 8club that have stuffed them in the 8. That's a lot more than just zoom-zoom.
