Some might not know but I'm looking for a little car for me to go to/from work/school when I move to Houston. I just don't want my TTZ parked for 6-8+hrs in a parking lot unattended. So I've been searching E-bay and other various websites. Anyhow I found a '03 Mazda Protege Speed in Houston and looks like a great deal. Tell me what you think about it, going price, specs, pluses/minuses, etc... Here are the links for the car;

That's an early Mazdaspeed Protege, which were known to have LSD issues. The '03.5 got a revised LSD but it still wasn't perfect. Alot of owners get their LSDs welded- not to make it a solid diff, but to keep it from coming apart. I'm not 100% on the specifics.

Mazda cheaped out on the rods for the MSP. They are the same rods found in the non-turboed Proteges and have been known to cause problem when the car is pushed hard or the boost is turned up.

Other than that, it's a pretty solid car.

I would think the ending price on that auction would be near or above $8,000.

LSD is an issue in the 03's. Do not turn the boost up as tom stated weak ass internals and upping boost= zoom zoom BOOM club. See if the timing belt water pump have been replaced. Motor mounts are weak and should be replaced ( I have yet to do mine but I really need to) If your stereo flips over and turns off just reset it and you will be good to go(common problem not sure why it does this) Pretty much if you daily drive this car and take care of it it will treat you good. Oh and see if the wastegate diaphraghm (sp?) was replaced quite a few msp's had to get these replaced because they would get a hole and you will hear a whistle type sound at idle. I had to replace mine at 35k so if this one has not been replaced then they have one of the few with no issues. The car looks really clean but some of the mods makes me say be cautious because you never know how hard they beat up on the car. Good luck and let us know what happens.
