Over the last week or so this noise has got louder. I have only noticed it while at idle...but it happens every time the compressor kicks in.
I have no idea how to describe it, so I captured the sound on my laptop microphone...so pretty bad quality...and fairly quiet too.
Any idea what this is and if it's a problem?

Easy fix Lee.
Turn up the Base! To be honest, I never use A/C (Only in our SUV). I hate losing 30+hp. I'll take the heat & wind with the windows down anyday ;-) I didn't listen to your .wav file, but I have a feeling it's either the belt, tensioner, or the compressor. I hate to say it, but I'd have a stealership check it out. Chances are the warranty will cover it if anything is wrong. My useless $.02

Doesn't work for me either.
A/C though Lee? Come on, it's April in CO.

Ok. "Right click" and "Save as". I want to actually help so I listened to it.
Sounds almost like the pulley is rubbing on the comp' housing. If it's not that, the tensioner has lost uh... tension.
Either way you're looking at an inexpensive fix. Now....
Turn the base on the way to the Stealership and have them repair it Lee ;-)

it could be the liquid running thru the lines. I work at an A/C shop (maxair) and we had something similar on a car we just installed a/c in. It ends up reverberating from the steel line(s) into the body. Apparently it only happens once that certain rpm is reached which in this case could be at idle. I know sounds hoakie (sp) but the boss has been doin this shit for 30 years so I'll trust his knowledge.
