The CP-E Standback is a purchase I have been arguing about with myself ever since I bought the car. With horror stories that Ive heard, I always had a reservation about spending roughly $1000 on something that will only create headaches in the long run.. or so I heard.

Once Rich had success with his standback install, I was much more interested in the product. Anybody who sees a 50whp gain on a product has got to be pretty damn impressed by it. When we went on the mountain cruise, I could see Rich's car lunging forward strong and hard in my rear view mirror.. it was shortly after then that I decided to make the purchase..

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

I called Josh at CP-E to order it directly, he is a very knowledgeable guy, he basically reinforced any doubts I had with assurance in the product. 3 days later there was a UPS tag on my door from CP-E..very fast sipping, I would recommend them highly..

When the package arrived, I was so damn excited to open it.. but when I pulled out that huge ass wiring harness, I thought to myself, this looks a little harder than I had imagined...it is plug and play, but all the wires involved can be a little intimidating. Fear not, following the easy directions provided made it a relatively simple installation.

At first, Rich had the inevitable fuel cut with the initial settings of the EMU. So, in fear of getting fuel cut myself, I opted to use the same setting Rich has to avoid fuel cut. Once installed, I went for a drive, and was very impressed, though confused. The Dashhawk read only 10.1 psi. Until I learned what boost clip actually was, I was worried. Boost clip is merely a signal that is sent to the ecu to say the car is at a lower boost than it actually is. After setting the boost clip to 10psi, rather than 8psi, I tried the 15psi map, ran strong, I tried the 17 psi map, it pulled even stronger, still no fuel cut. After reinstalling my manual boost gauge, my boost reading is spiking around 17-18psi. The car pulls harder the more you go through the rpms. There is no deviation from full boost at wot, no drop in psi AT ALL, all the way to red line. Keep in mind, these results are all with the "stock" tune, or a '0' map. I am very excited on getting a hold of somebody to tune this bad boy for me now.. The seat of the pants meter went way up, I would say at LEAST 30whp, but it could be more. I would definitely say that if anybody is considering the standback, but had reservations, DO IT. Its that simple.

As time goes on, I will try to note any changes, or tunes that are created to share for anybody else who is venturing into the world of the Standback. :koolaidman:

Sweet Eric! I have been reading up on this for our Speed3 for a few weeks. Sounds like they deliver what they claim. Good to know. Might get the Standback vs Accessport :3961a589:

Chris, you will love it...I dont see how a reflash can compare to a full tune anyways, but I guess we'll see once the accessport comes out

Waiting for Harvey to get with me on tuning, hopefully here in the next week or so...

Shops do have the Protune software for the Accessport, so they are able to do a full tune with the AP as well. The only difference is that the "tune" is saved as a map, and you then flash your car with that map.

I've always said Engine Management should be the first modification anyone does to a modern turbocharged performance vehicle. I was able to tune out fuel cut on my Speed6, and the car was catless, so I always figured there was just some over-looked factor in Josh's car that allowed fuel cut to continue.... glad to see you guys were both able to run 15-17psi worth of boost without fuel cut :)

Being that I was only running a simple DTEC FCBC, I was limited to pushing around 15psi of boost, only because pushing more boost than that would result in a lean spot around 3500rpm to matter how much I altered MAF voltage at that RPM. The car still had plenty of fuel up top (I actually pulled fuel rather than adding it in the upper RPM's), but down low (3500rpm), the car just didn't have anymore fuel to give. I can only hope and assume that since the Standback has 2 forms of fuel modification (MAF voltage & high pressure fuel pump sensor modification), that manipulating hi-pres fuel pump sensor voltage will give better results than I had, but only tuning will tell.

As far as reflash vs piggyback goes... well, the Accessport is more than just a base map reflash device... you can buy Street Tuner software if you want to tune the car yourself, and there are a few Cobb certified Protuners in the state that can tune your car with your AP & Protune software, making it just as powerful as an advanced piggyback like the Standback, in fact, in many cases, more powerful.... as instead of manipulating factory sensor inputs like you do with a piggyback, with flash based tuning, you actually reprogram the ECU to whatever parameters you want it to run, and if you want to raise things like fuel cut, instead of manipulating the MAP sensor (which is what the Standback does), you can just reset the FC boost limit, and if you're throwing a CEL, with a flash tuning device, you can just toggle the CEL off. Most tuners will recommend flash based tuning over a piggyback, and honestly, so would I.

Don't get me wrong, in the WRX world, I've seen people make big power out of UTEC's/Delta's ect, no doubt they work, but I just prefer flash based tuning.

Anyway, good luck tuning, and let us know what she puts down :)

I totally agree with you arctic.

I have seen time and time again where a flash tuner with some custom map capibilites can make some awesome power over a piggyback tune. I really want to see what COBB has for their Street Tuner setup. I am still leaning hard towards it. For my diesel, the flash tuning in my opinion is the ONLY why to go- unlimited options and unlimited power! So, we will sit back and weigh the options. I really want the capibility to custom tune my own setup.

Any idea how much the Street Tuner software is running?

I believe it runs 300 for the street tuning software although that'd be the Racetuner as streettuner i believe is for cobb certified technicians

Haha, hopefully I've got torque and less weight on my side... FTW! You SHOULD beat me though. We'll see...

He'll beat you Jack I know what they're pushing and he'll win. Think of Popeye just eating some mofo alien spinach.

I do too and its only gonna be 10-20 more Hp than what I'm pushing now... Like I said, more Torque and less Weight is a slight advantage for me. He'll likely walk away from me from a roll, but it won't be an ass whooping. :)
