Few questions from a Colorado & MS6 NooB

Ok,

1: Where can I buy 93, 94, or any octane better than 91? Is it at all available in CO?

2: Are there any local shops that offer parts, accessories for the 2.3? I am not a fan of ordering parts online etc, I prefer to be able to speak face to face to business's. Plus I am a fan of keeping my money in the local market. If not, I know of the online sources, but prefer to deal local.

3: Why is my "key" red? Is this something I can clear through the OBDII, or stealership only?

4: Is anyone closer to a Flash for the ECU? Or even stand alone management?

5: Who wants to sell me their turbo back exhaust ;-)

That should hold me over for a bit.

TIA-

1. There might be some places. The octain is lower in colorado because of the change in altitude. 91 in colorado = 93 in pen.

What part of town do you live in again? That way we or others can suggest a reputable Shop close to you. Thought about a CAI or BOV yet? Rich, another member just recieved his CPE Engine Management System this week and DID Dyno today at Revolutions Performance in Colorado Springs where some of us Dynoed over the weekend. Check out the "Dyno Sheets" thread.

Loveland, but I'll drive pretty much anywhere in the state (Even better if I have to go West through the "hills". Didn't we buy these cars to drive them after all ;-)

I will actually build my own CAI, I'd like to see an aftermarket one installed first though. As for a BOV, I am a big fan of leaving things as close to the stock setup as possible. Seeing Mazda made this a closed loop system I think I want to try a better BPV first. If that doesn't yeild what I want then I'll go the BOV way. As much as I love the psss, shoooo, of the BOV, I like the sleeper aspect even more ;-)

What time is Rich going to be at Rev' Per' tomorrow? Maybe I'll take a "field day" for work and drive down.

Thank you much!

My bad, Rich actually went today. I get my days mixed up... I work nights. Check out the "Dyno Sheets" thread in Meets and Events. Alot of us are running HKS SSQV BOV's in recirculation mode.

I was due to go Thursday, but a polygraph appointment I had today got cancelled and RP was able to fit me in. I have the HKS SSQV BOV, which you can run in full recirc (like factory) or vta. RP stocks the HKS SSQV, but I'm not sure about our other, closer, sponsors.

EDITED

1. Not many places around with higher than 91 octane. I occasionally get 100 octane from Country Pumps in Highlands Ranch, just past Chatfield on Santa Fe.

2. Not many local shops carry parts for us. Street Concepts may have some items in stock.

3. I believe a red "key" indicator is your key fob battery needs replacing.

4. I hear the Cobb AccessPORT may be coming out soon. Otherwise, nothing else for flash or standalone apps. The CP-E system is piggyback.

5. Don't got one :)

Thank you much Rich. Just curious, but an ECU needs proper mapping for it to totally optimize for race gas. At best it will recalibrate after a tank or so, but with the ECU in stock format, I don't think it will adjust 100% for that octane. At least this held true with my other cars. I had to have a flash for different octane’s, then switch it via the cruise control stalk.

Does the CP-E Standback allow you to advance timing at add/pull fuel? How about mbar? Very cool (and I'm getting it) if it does.

Thanks again Rich!

Yes, full 30x30 maps are available for timing, boost, and fuel for the CP-E Standback 2. It also comes with a toggle switch to change between maps.
Check it out here http://www.cp-e.com/2045.html

As for adjusting for octane, the Speed6 ECU can adjust timing (pull or advance) based on if it is sensing knock or not. The change is gradual and slight, but it does happen. And besides, I don't get a full tank of 100 octane....that would be suicide to my mileage and wallet ($6.30/gallon). Instead I mix 50/50 for a resultant 95.5 octane.

I just found out on Sunday that the Shell station off alameda and Union (by the hambuger stand) sells 100 oct. They have it on a back pump.

Yea, that's a must now. Very similar to other software I have used. Lemmiwinks was the same idea. Thanks for the breakdown and link.

Remember 2 years ago in the summer gas was around $3.50 (Super, that's all I ever have used in every car, so I have no idea what 87* was), Sunoco "Purple pump" was $7.85 (100*) I'd usually wait until I was below 1/4 and put in 10 gallons. What a fun 120-150 miles that was ;-) Crazy you can get 30-60hp for only 6 points higher.

Like mentioned before, there's no form of standalone or flash based EM on the market for the Speed6. Cobb is just about to release the flash based Accessport for the Speed3, but no word on if they'll definitely release the AP for the Speed6. It's listed on their site, but it's been pretty much a dead project on the Speed6 for over a year now.

As far as an intake goes, spend your money on something more worthwhile. With a CAI, you're looking at picking up an honest 2-4hp at peak (might make a little more in the upper RPMs after peak power has already dropped off), if that. Now as for the factory BPV... from the factory, it's a plastic POS, that has been known to leak boost. In the WRX/STI world, upgrading your BPV/BOV is typically a waste of time until you get to about the 400whp mark, but on a Speed6/3, it's recommended. When I still had a Speed6, I ran a BPV from a 1st Gen DSM, that I crushed with a vice, which worked great, and held an extra psi of boost or two in the upper RPMs.

The Standback EM system is a pretty nice piggyback, most definitely the best current option on the market. It can control the factory BCS, modify fuel trim via MAF/MAP sensor manipulation, and timing through manipulating the CAS. If I still had a Speed6, it's probably what I would have eventually would have switched over to from the DTEC FCBC.

With a full turboback, assuming you're going to run cat-less, you're going to experience frequent fuel cut in 3rd-6th gears. If you're going to run a full TBE, I would recommend picking up an EM system like the Standback to go with it, not only to tune your AFR's to make sure the car doesn't run lean, but also to help eliminate fuel cut, so your new found power will actually be usable in 3rd-6th gears. My recommendations for first mods, would be EM, TBE (actually you won't get much power from a cat-back, most of your power will be from the downpipe alone) and an upgraded BPV/BOV in recirc, only to prevent the stock BPV from leaking boost. If you need more power after that, we'll talk :)

Now as far as octane goes... 91 octane at altitude does not necessarily equal 93 at sea level. Yes octane is lowered at altitude, but it doesn't mean 91 has the same resistance to detonation as 93. At sea level, ambient air is approx 14.7psi or 1 bar. Up here, it's closer to 12psi. This means, specifically for NA cars, they're not seeing the same air pressures at the manifold as they would at sea level.... so aledgedly, you should have richer AFR's here (although most newer cars have MAF/MAP sensors that will attempt to correction fuel trims to compensate for the increase in altitude), and richer AFR's mean less chance of detonation... less chance of det, to some people mean they can run a lower octane gas without worrying about knock. To me, as long as it's not leaded (will destroy O2's), the higher the octane the better. The higher the octane, the leaner you can run the car without knocking, which means more boost, advancing timing a few degrees ect. Overall, I wish we had 93 up here :(

I could recommend a couple local shops to buy parts from, but I'll be completely honest with you, you'll probably find better deals from online vendors. PM me for info on local shops if you would like.

Lastly, if you're looking for higher octane gas, you're pretty much limited to Sunoco pumps, that carry 100/104 octane fuel. Here's a list of every Sunoco pump in the state:
http://www.sunocoinc.com/Site/Consumer/Rac...ns/Colorado.htm

Happy modding :)
