But being without payments would be really nice.

Yeah, I see what you mean now. Warranties are nice and fixed 90% of my problems with the 8 at no cost to me. Maybe consider a private party sale. You could possibly get more out of it than on a trade in.

Just Make sure your new/new used car has a long warranty because every car has problems and even if they are little they are costly just cause of how much labor the dealers/shops charge. My brother just bought a Pontiac GTP for real cheap with a blown tranny. $300 for a tranny and 5 hrs later the car was back on the road. He would easily have spent over 1k if he had a shop install it.

BTW, How much is the part you're needing to change anyway. You could save some dough and install it yourself if you want to spend the time to.

Well, labor on the job is 3.6 hours, which amounts to about $360. The total job cost is something like $450-500, so the part has to be in the $90-140 range.

But it's an internal engine part, and I don't know that I'd want to attempt installing it myself, especially when the dealership limited powertrain warranty will cover half if I get it done before April 17th.

So I'm looking at $250...but I will also need to buy summer tires then, and in the summer, I'm looking at a brake job, too. The tires and brake job aren't breakdowns, but they're still going to cost $$. I'm hoping for another bonus at the end of the year. If that happens, we're golden.

Hokay....

Brake job can be done yourself (with assistance). I may know someone who will be able to help with an internal engine bit (depending on how that friendship goes over the next few months). You can get great deals on summer tires coming up soon. Send me a txt telling me what size you need and I'll call a shop up here and see what they have.

Thanks, Lyssa. Like I said earlier, I'll probably let the warranty handle the VVT actuator thing. $250 from me, and it should be fixed.

Brakes will be about $350 for the parts I want. New front rotors, Hawk HPS pads all around, and SS lines maybe.

Summer tires -- well, I figure I'll go cheap and get a set of Diamondbacks. $290 shipped to my door from one website. If they suck, so what? I only spent $300 on them.

You don't *need* stainless steel lines and by doing them you're going to have to throw down on brake fluid too.

Good choice on the hawk pads, they're excellent and if you can, Centric (used to be Stoptech) makes nice rotors.

Yeah, the SS lines are an "if possible" item. And I found my rotors at a place Milo showed me...good prices. Forget the site, off-hand, but it's a good choice.

If I do manage a bonus in January, it's ALL going to the car. ALL OF IT.

I see. Didn't realize that that was an internal part. Maybe buy a rotary less internal parts. ;)

You'd think that since it is part of the powertrain and an internal part that the warranty you have left would cover the entire cost.

Nope. Says right on the warranty sheet that it covers 50% of the costs of parts and labor. Anyone thinking of buying "Certified Used" from Bob Penkhus remember that.

Shouldn't something that's been identified as defective on a TSB be fully covered?

You'd think so right?

Stealth, is this an extended free warranty from Mazda like they have for the RX-8 or is something extra from the dealer?

Yes, there is a TSB (01-002/08), and yes the warranty is aftermarket.

A TSB that came out under warranty should be covered by them since they didn't catch it when you still had a warranty, and I'm sure you're car was there at least once or twice with warranty. I'd understand if the TSB was post warranty. Raise hell and talk to the service manager at Motor City. That's what I've done and I get shit no prob now. Threatened to call Mazda USA corporate and now they know me by name. :D

I have never had success getting a TSB worked on when the car is out of warranty. Otherwise, people would drive their 20 year old cars into dealer for "free" repairs all of the time. If the car did not exhibit symptoms of the item covered by the TSB during other shop visits, well, you're pretty much SOL. MNAO has been mostly unsupportive when I've used them.

I have always had my Saabs fixed for free for out of warranty TSBs. They usually only nix the idea if you have a huge amount of mileage on the vehicle. I would call the US Customer Service rep. to pre-arrange the TSB fix.
