bobopud wrote:I have read that only the CPE CAI fits with the CPE FMIC, something to do with the positioning of the MAF sensor. I think I will just do what you did, Eric, and hack the Mazdaspeed CAI into a SRI. I may have to schedule a trip up to your shop for some install and hacksaw help, of course the beer will be on me.

As far as getting the MS6 ECU cracked, there is a guy on 6club that is attempting to crack it, but I guess it is a pretty long and arduous process, hence the price tag on the Standback. That is also another reason that I am putting off buying a tuner, I think I may buy used when I get to that point anyway. Cobb has their accessport available, but without a tuning software you are at their mercy for tuning solutions, which does not sit well with me.

Some of you may be familiar with Whoosh over on 6club and his exploits prior to tuning. These cars seem to react well with the stock ecu as long as you aren't stupid about it. It is unfortunate that once whoosh got tuning he decided that the car was more trouble than it is worth.

My hope is that by the time summer rolls around I will have enough saved up and available to get EMS, whatever system that may be.

I didn't realize Cobb released the AP for the Speed6... I knew about the Speed3 AP, but not the Speed6. About damn time! In that case, if I were you, I would forgo the CP-E and just pick up an AP. Trust me on this one, you'll be happy you did in the long run.

Sure, there's no tuning software available right now, but there will be. Cobb has released Street/Protuner software for EVERY AP they've ever made. Sometimes it takes a while, but it will be there. Rather than paying for a piggyback that manipulates sensor inputs, just buy a device that actually reprograms the ECU. I've played with both over the years, and for reliable, consistent results, flash based ECU tuning>piggyback tuning, in every way. Don't believe me, call around to some of the more reputable tuners in the state, and ask them why they don't tune piggybacks. For first ones that come to mind are Adam at Revolutions & Harvey formerly of Super Rupair. Sure, there are still tuners that will touch piggybacks on modern turbo cars, but when the best available to you locally won't, you have to ask yourself... why?!?

For instance.. you don't want boost cut right? On a piggyback, it's going to intercept your MAP signal prior to hitting the ECU, and manipulate the value prior to entering the ECU. Sure, that's one way to do it. There's also another way to do it... with AP/open source software, you can actually program the ECU to target a certain boost level. No signal manipulation, you actually set your target boost, as well as your target fuel cut. Even though it's not much of an issue for you direct injection guys, but try scaling larger fuel injectors with a piggyback vs a flash lol. Sure, it can be done, but it's more of a work around. There are PLENTY of fast cars running piggybacks, but consult any reputable tuner, and anyone worth their salt will tell you the same thing I'm telling you, flash>piggyback.

Hell, for a Subaru, ask Nick at MAC what he recommends (not saying he's the best tuner, but tunes quite a few cars)... and he'll tell you open source. Open source is free... nothing for him to sell... not going to make him ANY additional profits off of parts sales... tunes with it all the time. Doesn't take anymore time to tune. Kind of off topic, but there's even a patch out for OS which allows you to run SD (speed density), essentially making your MAF sensor function only as an IAT sensor, allowing you to tune your car via MAP sensor in order to use boost as a load site reference. Cool stuff for sure. Me personally, I think factory turbo cars should all come from the factory setup as SD... but that's just me.

I see the Standback as the Subaru community saw the UTEC/Delta years ago... everyone touted it as the greatest thing to ever exist, people made great power, and liked being able to play with things themselves... then came flash based tuning, the Accessport & Ecutek.... people heckled them, saying they preferred being able to manipulate their ECU themselves.... then came Street Tuner software (for AP) & people coming up with OS software... then came a LARGE number of people selling their UTEC's on Nasioc for dirt cheap lol. Now almost no one runs a UTEC/Delta/*insert piggyback here*, unless they bought one years ago, and still haven't sold it. All the major tuners throughout the nation stopped recommending piggybacks, and started insisting people tune via flash based source.

If you're not planning on having the car tuned professionally for a while, pick up the AP, you'll be glad you did. Sure, you're not going to see huge gains from Cobb's conservative OTS maps, that's not the point... you're going to see big gains when you have your car professionally tuned, more importantly, you're going to know your car is making big power safely. Is it easier to just buy a Standback and turn up the boost to make big power? Hell yes! At that point though, you basically just bought a $950 EBC lol. Should have just saved your money and bought a Profec B lol, if you're not actually going to use the Standback to tune the car.

You see it all the time... someone who just uses the Standback to crank up the boost without tuning.... then you see them make multiple dyno pulls... sure, they'll have 1 or 2 really nice pulls, but multiple pulls will reveal random dips and spikes in torque/horsepower, you can see on their graphs where the ECU is pulling/adding timing. The word consistent does not come to mind. A well tuned is not only makes good power, but makes it repeatedly. It's a car where knock correction stays right around 0. Don't get me wrong, assuming you have the fuel overhead, a car running only a MBC to up the wick has the ability to be very fast, but IMO, isn't the right way to do things, and certainly not the right way to make your car last. Sure, it might last a long time put-putting back and forth to work staying out of boost for long periods of time, but on a canyon run on a hot day, maybe not so much.

Personal question for you... who do you plan on tuning your car eventually? Whoever that person is, give them a call... tell them about the Standback, then tell them the AP was recently released, and ask them what they think. Just my $.02 [/EM_Rant]

SRI = short ram intake. Also sometimes denoted as a WAI = warm air intake, since it takes air from the hot engine bay.

The debate over CPE vs. Cobb is part of the reason I decided to go with a FMIC right now instead of tuning. I am hoping that the cobb tuning software will be available by summertime, that will pretty much seal the deal, but if it isn't released and we have to wait another 2-3 years like we did for the AP in the first place, then I will go with CPE.

I saw that one, but I see some issues with clearance over the PG Manifold as well as this still being a top mount and subject to heatsoak, albeit not as bad as the stocker.

It all depends on how its installed. You would need a signifigant heat exchanger. Any heat sources near any of the lines will effect the water temp. Once stopped, your bound to heat-soak the water. It takes a lot more time to cool down a gallon or two of water then just the air/air heat exchanger.
If you take measures, with fans and large heat exchangers, w/a can work well on the street. But if you flog it, then let it sit while your munchin a burger, expect that water to be nice and toasty when you start her up again.

However, at the track its hard to beat. Because you can super cool the liquid with ice and other means. You can see below ambient temps with a liquid setup, which is NEVER possible with air to air, unless you are injecting methanol

BTW, I got my tracking info on the FMIC and it should be here on Friday.

Eric, any chance you got some free time this weekend for some install fun since you have all the experience.

I'd definitely come up your way. Having you drive down here to install my parts would be asking a bit much I think.

Besides, how do you enjoy beer if you have to drive so damn far?

I assume the hack job on the Mazdaspeed CAI is fairly easy and can be done then too.

Big thanks to Eric for helping with the install of my FMIC. Besides for a misplaced weld on CP-E's part everything was pretty smooth.

Unfortunately I think I have found the cause of the compressor surge with the MS6. I think the extra long piping of the FMIC is too much for most BOV's to handle. I was getting surge all the way home if I entered boost. It really is a terrible sound to hear.

Guess I will be finding a new BOV soon, I guess the HKS just doesn't cut it for a FMIC.

hows the FMIC flow, theres a bumper support in the front that blocks air flow to it once installed...
