Renesis Rx wrote:OK so after the weeks of searching and then researching when the dealership SOLD THE DAMN CAR OUT FROM UNDER ME that I was working on, I will be keeping my 8. I started doing a bit of research on the NADA of the GTO and the 8. Believe it or not, the 8 actually has a higher value than the GTO. Even with that, the 8 is pretty upside down because of the stupid ass resale value of them. Meaning I would have to roll over so much negative equity that it will make the GTO unfinancable even with a 3 grand down payment. So AIM and 6i stop the paperwork, I'm not going anywhere. Chicken Waffer, lets boost this BIATCH!

Sweet, let's do it!!

I made more torque on the dyno today than a GTO anyways :D:eek:

^Holy S**T. That's alot of damn torque. Ok man as I've never done a turbo before, what the hell am I doing? I mean I know the basics of what is needed but with the 8 being so damn picky, is it best to get a kit or try and do a build it urself type jobby? I've heard the horror stories about GReddy and if I'm not mistaken, they went under anyway.

No GReddy didn't go under, GReddy's parent company in Japan (Trust) filed for bankruptcy but they just came out of it with new investors a month or so ago. Trust has little to do with GReddy anyways on the business side of things.

The GReddy kit is good if you use it for what it was intended to do- 5-6psi. But no one does that. Really only the turbo is the downfall of the kit.

Unless you know how to weld, engineering, and fabricate shit, then I would stay away from a DIY turbo. You will just end up with more headaches.

How much are you looking to spend? If money is tight then a used GReddy kit and a BNR upgraded turbo is the way to go. The BNR turbo upgrades the GReddy to a 60-1 basically which makes it flow MUCH better. It cost $1,000.

I just want to preface all this however that unless you have the money and are able to replace a blown motor, don't put a turbo on.

As of right now I'm not looking to make a monster 8. I just want a little more in the reange of torque and HP. I'm guessing you blew a motor then?

No I think he is just giving standard Rotary advice. Those of us with boosted rotaries walk a fine line everyday. Now mind you it has become MUCH safer to run boost than it was even 5 years ago. I would also suggest you look into a water inj. system. Mine has been an engine saver for years now. $500 well spent!

Yeah I've definetly heard about people blowing their rotaries, but have never actually come across one.

I have blown an engine but it was back when I was NA and I have a Mazda reman now.

Rotaries can be really strong in certain curciumstances and also really fragile. A friend of mine in Phoenix with a 580-rwhp FC is on motor #4....

It's just something I say to ANYONE considering putting a turbo on a naturally aspirated engine, or when people start turning up the boost on FI engines. You have to realize the engine can blow, piston or rotary. And then you have to be able and willing to replace it, or you have a car that can't go anywhere and an expensive paperweight LOL

When you say monster 8 what do you have in mind?

Here's a tip: Come up with some goals. Power? Torque? Driveablitly? Will you be the only one driving the car? Does fuel economy matter? What will you do with the car mostly (fun street car, road race, time attack, drag, show, etc)? Budget? These are all big concerns.

There is an old adage: When modifying a car in can be Fast/Cheap/Reliable. Pick two and it won't be the other. For example, if it's fast and cheap, it won't be reliable, but if it's cheap and reliable, it won't be fast, and if it's fast and reliable, it won't be cheap.

You're like my own little Confucius. LOL I kinda already have that in mind. Power I'm looking for about 270-280 HP pulling maybe like 200 torque. Like I said, not a lot. Fuel economy...well I wouldn't have gotten a rotary if I gave a shit about that. LOL I want it to be something that I could drive everyday (I won't but..) and also be able to take it to the track and pull decent times. With that I figure I could stay around 3 grand and be ok. But I'm no expert.

There is a guy on the 8 club right now selling a Greddy turbo kit without a BOV for 3K. You could probably get cheaper from him, since everyone is telling him that it is too much (it is)!

Offer him 2K and see what he says. He seems desparate for money since his engine blew. Then you can spend the other 1K for everything else that you will need. It will be a lot more than 3k most likely.

1. Engine management ( I would get an AP and throw the emanage away)
2. BOV
3. Different intake set up (since the stock greddy blows).
4. Midpipe
5. Whatever else Dave could tell you since he has done this.

If I could afford it I would definitly do it! I love my 8 as is, but imagining it with another 50 to 100wtq/ whp. Would be HEAVEN!

That used GReddy kit is a rip off, stay away

You can still pick up a used kit for under $2k if you look. I'm not sure if Dan sold his kit yet (cool guy in Maryland) I will investigate.

But in addition to the GReddy kit I would do this:
-Used GReddy Kit ~ $2000-2500
-BNR Upgraded turbo ~$1000
-Blow-off valve (unless included in used kit) ~ $250ish
-AEM Cold Air intake (unless you can find a GEN 1 K&N intake used but those are rare) ~ $300
-Cobb AccessPORT ~ $695
-Budget for Misc parts, nuts, bolt, fitting and crap (this stuff adds up QUICK) ~ $500
-Catless midpipe is a must for turbo ~ $250-$400
-Upgrade the couplers and clamps on the GReddy kit (unless already done) the ones that come with it are crap ~ $175
-Boost controller is a good idea ~ $85 bucks for a manual up to $500 for a nice electronic one

There might be some other stuff I am missing. You can keep your fuel system stock with that kind of power.

I will have to give you a ride in my car someday so you can feel the powwa.
