For most people that is the case. I am only chimming in because I am c going through this right now. I drive about 75-100 mile a day for work and average about 16 MPG per tank. The thing is that I know that I am not saving any money, but rather alowing that money to work for me a little smarter. Gas is not going to get any cheaper and will need to have a least on car in the family that gets good gas milage. You are right Tom, it will take a long time to "justify the purchase" .
Yeah, that sucks.
If you run the economics on it, it actually takes quite awhile to justify the purchase of a different, more fuel efficient car. I work with a guy that lives in Parker. His one-way commute is about 30 miles. He normally drives an AWD 6 cylinder Jeep that gets 15-18 mpgs. He went out and bought some $2000 economy car. I figured that he's probably saving 2 gallons a day- or $8 a day. It would take him 250 days (or about a working year) to justify the purchase of the car.[/b]

The economics of what you are describing make perfect sense to me. A one year pay off is pretty good.
But you are right that people react irrationally and don't process the economics of it; I've read some anecdotal stories of insane decisions about gas prices.
One was a guy Wyoming with a loaded 07 Commander, trying to sell it and hoping for only a 10K loss so that he could buy a new 08 Commander and get the $2.99 gas card. So if you run the numbers and look at the limitations of the gas card, he saves $800 in gas ($2400 over three years) but loses $10K immediately.

And for you it makes sense because you want to keep the miles off your truck.
