Mazda CX-5, Sky Active, Diesel Mazda 3

I think it's gorgeous, am curious to see how close the production version of that concept will be, and whether they will offer it with a manual transmission, unlike the CX-7/9. It's like a 1st-gen MZ3's big brother.

I'm sure that is what we are gonna get. In the video they announce it as coming to this Fall's line-up. Unless I heard wrong.

I think it looks good. The new Skyactiv motors are also pretty interesting. They utilize a high compression ratio (14.0:1) and direct injection to achieve a "lean burn" design, maximizing fuel efficiency.

So the Skyactiv 1.3L 4-cylinder nets 70mpg in current testing and makes around 89bhp. Not exciting power but it's better than a hybrid IMO and there are less systems to break down and no battery packs to eventually fail. I think this is a more realistic approach to achieving long term fuel efficiency standards.

It would be interesting to see how the aftermarket responds to these new Lean Burn, ultra high compression motors. Going over the press material, Mazda says they finely tuned everything from the exhaust header to the piston crown to avoid detonation with the ultra high compression ratio on regular 87 octane. So putting in an aftermarket exhaust system could potentially make your motor knock, badly.

I don't know why they didn't bring the diesel version to the US a LONG time ago. It's not rocket science. Everywhere else in the world are using diesel because of fuel economy. I've been wanting a diesel car for a long time but just want more options than the TDI VW. I would take a diesel 3 or 2.
