I would go 390 over 401. They are better motors even though they are smaller but I guess they are hard to find.

It's not just the tuning... If you get a 4-bbl, you may be looking at regular rebuilds. Edelbrock is good. You may find some good info on the Jeep sites. I helped the kid across the street get his '75 Jeep going after letting him suffer a while in his own DIY hell. LOL

here's a pic of it, i live up by the sonic we meet at now, so if you want to come by, feel free.

i also found a local guyparting a 1977 w/ 360, and hes going to sell me both dana 44 axles, the power steering pump, master cylinder, and heads for $350
that gets me a larger brake master cylinder. better axles. and disc front brakes. in a "mostly bolt in" package and the d44's can take up to 8" of lift before the pinion angle is to the point of premature wear on the ujoints. which is good because i want at MOST 6" of lift (wanted 4" of lift but SOA swap brings it to 6" in the front and gives me better articulation)

I can help with this build if you want it. I have a friend who's dad is really into old jeeps. He's had a few of these over the years and my friend had a 1/2 ton pickup.

Those Palm trees look a bit out of place for Colorado! Kind of reminds me of warmer spots out west.

yeah that picture was in arizona, the jeep has always been an az vehicle.

SO,
i have now ordered and received or are waiting on, edelbrock performer intake manifold. edelbrock carb, edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner. a set of headers, flowmaster 40 series mufflers, an HEI electronic distributor, plug wires, plugs, a nice cam and lifers, waterpump, timing chain and gears, and all the gaskets to complete

gonna call a guy about a 360 he has that has a bad crank bearing and rod bearing and he wants to sell me the entire engine for 100 bucks. i just want the heads so it should be a good deal.

So, all the parts are in. but im debating whether to paint it that mint green, and leave all the chrome/polish it/ recoat it. which i have a feeling will be expensive..
or Paint it white, get the rhino grill. get the big offroad black bumpers black wheels, black roofrack, and paint all the chrome black. kinda like this but its grandpa.

I'd repaint it the original color and leave the crome.

Yes, I much prefer the pic you posted earlier of the lifted green version to the white version.

allrighty. so just spent a few hours poking around under the hood, and tearing bits off. this is gonna be a pain if i want it to look good.
im going to have to pull every thing off the fenderwells and get some stripper and strip sand and recoat everything with black engine paint. thats after degreasing EVERYTHING. power steering pump has been leaking for years so that entire lower half of the engine/ chassis is coated with layers of dirt and oil
But it was kinda cool stripping some of the grime off and finding the beautiful original amc blue paint on parts.

otherwise I have no idea what im doing lol. damn old V8. its funny I can tear down a modern 4cyl. but looking at other parts Im confused and may need a mechanic to put it all back together. Im kinda affraid to pull wires and hoses because I wont know where they go when it comes back to rebuild time.

issues I have found.
1: the screws on the bottom of the grill are rusted together, so it
looks like ill have to get a drill and tap and die to get it off so i
can yank the cam.
2: I have NO idea how to get the corner lamps off.
3: smog system is so corroded when i took off the hoses the metal
started falling apart and a tap with a screwdriver is enough to
disintegrate them. Then realized that my edelbrock intake manifold
doesn't have provisions for a EGR and the headers I have dont have the
ports for the air injection.
4: ALL the Vacuum lines are corroded, cracking, and hardened and alot
seem to be missing.
5: I have no idea what im doing under here yet. heck last night i spent
10 minutes playing with my carb figuring out how it works.
I've torn down ATV's and done alot of work on my Mazda. but I'm kinda
intimidated by this. So I just ordered a original factory service manual, as well as a Haynes manual to supplement it.

At this point im debating just getting it running and either keeping it
as is or selling it. or doing the right thing, running all new wires.
rebuild it all and make it as nice as i can and beable to run around
in a bit more style then if i just went out and bought a mid 90's truck

for some pictures.

here is the air injection corrosion.

here is the heater blower I dont know where the wire goes....

wiring job
