Clicking noise
I had the same on my MS3. It is a lack of lubrication on the splines on the CV half shafts. If it is still under warranty the dealer will do it for free. It is something that they know about. I have not had a problem since. Good luck.

Clicking noise
Just had my MS3 looked at at mazda for a clicking noise from front L & R wheel well areas. Turns out to be a TSB for lack of lube on the splines of the half shafts. Easy fix but prob. not the same problem as the clunking. Just throwing it out there.
Wow
6 deployments, damn, that sucks. Thats either 2 years of Air Force deployments or 6 to 9 years Army. Either way, time away from home is time away from family, home, and your car . Good luck and take care on the trip.

TMIC cooling?
At the risk of ridicule, what about mounting a thinline electric fan, say like a transmission radiator fan over it? There is enough clearance to mount withen the boundaries of the hood duct seal.

Un-heater core.
If you cannot find anyone to do it on your days off then I would suggest doing it yourself. The problem is, Do you have tools and a manual that tells you where it is exactly? They tend to be burried in the AC/Heater blower assy which tends to be burried under and behind the dash. Not a lot of fun on...
