The ignition switch does work fine on its own, the key just won't stay in it.

Do you have to have the anti-theft lock on the steering column as part of the ignition. can I just take it off and have the ignition placed some where else, like the lower part of the dash. Ignition question
Hi All,
I have to put a new ignition switch in an 83 RX7. Is it true I basically have to bust open the metal housing? can I reroute some way.
By the way I know nothing about mechanics and just want to learn how to fix my own car.
